Bravo 3 problems going into reverse?

Hey folks,
Looking for some advice on where to start my investigation.
While doing my normal approach into my slip(smooth arch and then a little reverse to get it backed in) they drive seemed like it didn't engage reverse. The shifter was in reverse and the revs came up boat I was still gliding forward. It was followed a second or two later by a loud clunck and then finally reverse agnagement. By this point I drifted by my slip so I circled back and it did it again. I was a bit freaked so I just put it in the slip and didn't investigate further. Had a bunch of people on the boat and the rain was coming so we hustled off the boat and I didn't have any further time to look into it.
When I run down there this week where should I start? I am assuming something loose with the throttle/transmission cable bracket? Any other hints. How the heck is this thing supposed to be adjusted?
