One simple mistake.....

So the guy that has taught me most about my boat and the water just made one major mistake... he has a 16 year old daughter that I let use my XLT1200 2 stroke jet ski when we are out on the water.  Thing is practically a tank, not much you can do to it to hurt it. Add oil and gas and she goes.  I've had it now for 10 years and still runs top notch and looks better than most skis on the water.  So when I headed out of town last week she asked to use it while I was gone, I said yes.  No question about it, he's done so much for me and is way more knowledgeable about boats and etc than I am.  Well he accidentally put gas into the oil tank and didn't catch the mistake.  His daughter went out on the water for a ride, 30 minutes later.... motor is now seized up.... fml.

Oh man!  That just sucks!  Sorry to hear that.  Especially to something that has ran well for so long.  I have those concerns with my son now at 15 (I don't let my 17yr old daughter do it - no, not bc she's a girl, but bc she doesn't want to understand).  We have lots of toys at home that some take mixed gas/oil, some don't and some put oil and then gas separately.  Well, hopefully it all works out somehow.

We are going to go half on top end parts and I will rebuild it.  He feels so bad.  I told him that ski was bullet proof, just not Shannon Proof!! Oh well.  Life lessons.

Your a nice guy. I wouldn’t stick my friend with a complete pro engine replacement, but he’d be paying for all of the parts if he did it and I was doing the work.

Well, it looks like I jinxed my self by posting to this thread.  I just put my Seadoo GTX in last night and one of my tie down straps was loose and I sucked the metal hook on the end of it into the impeller and I am pretty much sure I destroyed the impeller and maybe the pump housing too.

The pump isn't cheap. When I had an SPX, the bearing went bad on the impeller and rounded out the housing. I had to replace the entire housing and guts. I feel for you.

replaced a impeller on a gt 1200 not a bad job I found one on ebay

The bad part is I just replaced the wear ring and impeller.  Wonder if insurance will cover... hmm.
