Kenyon cooktop problem

Hello everyone. We have a Kenyon 213 alcohol/electric cooktop on our 280ec and the alcohol side of things has never worked properly. Kenyon parts are VERY difficult to get hold of here in the UK, but recently I did manage to obtain a new wick for it -- in fact it appears to be two sets of wicks -- 2 x fibre wicks and 2 x metal gauze discs. I removed the remains of the original one, cleaned everything out, fitted the fibre wick first and fitted the gaze disc on top of that, filled the stove with  the prescribed amount of alcohol and lit it. Everything seems to work as it should -- central chimney lights OK and after a short time the "jets" also light up. However, a little while after that the whole thing makes a soft "whoosh" and seems to just blow itself out. What am I doing wrong???? Any suggestions would be very welcome.
