For all the boat geeks out there have you seen SignalK?

SignalK allows you to obtain NMEA 2000 data and do what you want with it.

That could mean build your own custom interfaces, dials ect for displaying boat data.

Pretty interesting to a guy like me.

So what's the advantage over Smartcraft?

@Stodge - It's more like a replacement for VesselView.  It still ties into SmartCraft, but provides readable engine data for you to do whatever you want with.

I'm a software developer by profession.  I love building custom interfaces ect.

I'd love to take that raw smartcraft data and build my own interface of guages, alerts ect...

I was a developer back in the day (Cobol, Fortran, C, VB) then I moved to databases (Oracle, SQL Server, Informix and once-upon-a-time Sensible Solution).  Now I tinker with odds and ends like Raspberry PIs and other toys.

It might be fun to write something to show engine data, but not sure I could squeeze it in with the other projects I have (like learning Ruby).  The last thing I played with was a automated radio station player written in Gambas on the PI.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

@Stodge - I'm kind of in the same "boat" with available time.  I have a 7 month old not a whole lot of time to spare.  I really like the idea though and would love to tinker with it.

My question would be is how fast it reacts to say engine rpm changes.  It would have to be just as fast as VV in reaction time otherwise trying to build out guages no a screen would be pointless.

Sounds familiar. I'm at Teradata now, but worked my way up from fixing computers in the back of a shop to architecting data centers. I play with tech stuff on the side and have a small business providing IT Managed Services to other small businesses. I know a lot of IT stuff, but three little girls. I barely find the time to keep the vehicles maintained, and feel like I'm neglecting the girls when I'm working on the boat, but we have a lot of fun overnighting on it (aka the payoff).

As an open architecture, I like it.  I'm not generally into IoT as a "because we can" thing, and I don't necessarily want my boat connected to the world.  But maybe some clever developer will think of something genuinely new.

@skennelly what type of stuff would you develop if you did have time?

@skennelly I would like 3 touch screens at my helm that would allow to what ever info on them available. Thanks Chris.

Raymarine already makes that!  You just need money.

Sh @LaRea that's 8 grand for the set up.
@skennelly going to make it happen for 1G.

Looking at the specs some more it appears there is already a drag n drop interface of some type.

    @LaRea - IoT is something configured....not required.

True - it's expensive to do a glass helm with marine-grade hardware.  I'm just saying, if the only innovation is to reduce the cost by using cheap flimsy tablets, that's not much of an innovation.  It would be great to see something that's never been done before.

(I also think that an express cruiser is no place for a touch-only interface, but that's a different discussion.)

I would be more inclined to use something like this as a diagnostic tool, but by the time all is said and done you could buy Rinda software for laptop.
