Ilmor Engines and Ilmor 1 Drive

WillhoundWillhound Member Posts: 4,187 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've been seeing more and more information on the Ilmor line of engines and drives and have to say that I like what I see. Particularly the drives with electromagnetically activated hydraulic cone clutch. Zero clunk or chatter when shifting and from what I can see, simply amazing in joy stick mode on twins.
Has me wondering if the drive would be compatible with a Mercruiser block should somebody want to switch.
Anyone have experience or opinions on these?

They are using GM blocks which Mercruiser also uses, but the issue is what modifications would be needed to mount the outdrive ( made by Yanmar ) to a transom that was setup for a mercruiser outdrive.

They will face the same hurdle as any other competitor of Mercruiser:  the near-universal availability of Merc parts and service (well, in North America anyway).  Gotta be pretty good to make a dent in that market.
