Hi Guys,

noticed that the port outdrive has some play in it, while swimming this weekend. The starboard outdrive has very little movement side to side. But the port outdrive has about 1/4 inch or so.

I checked the steering rack, and there is no play.

What on the outdrive could give play?

You didn't say which drive...but most likely it's your gimbal ring is worn causing the excess play.  It's $$ to fix...either the engine needs to be pulled or there is a fix out there for repairing it by cutting an access hole in the drive.

Could a  worn steering pin cause some play?

yes , more likely loose / worn steering pin. You can have a look at behind the engine.

There is a u bolt around the steering pin could try to snug up. Hours and year will dictate the repair.

If your primary drive that has the active power steering pump has no play and your slave drive has only 1/4” then you are just fine. There is going to be a little play in the slave.
