yep, cross chains and also make sure your hooks have sufficient strength to hold that sudden jerk if it pops loose. I see trailers all the time with a little dinky hook that probably couldn't hold 50lbs.
Several years ago a high school friend and 2 of his triplets were killed when a trailer came unhooked from another truck. I was pretty vigilant before when it came to checking my trailer but that changed it for me. I am OCD about trailer safety now.

I was heading home from the lake yesterday, and saw a guy pulling a Eliminator Daytona 30' with a half ton Ford, and when he passed me, I noticed he didn't have any safety chains. I told my wife I was slowing down to let him get farther away from us. I'm not sure if I was more concerned that he was pulling a 30' Eliminator with a half ton, or he didn't have chains, but either way I didn't want to be around him.
@boatman37 sad story, sounded like good guy, teacher, father, role model,
He really was a great guy. One of the nicest you could meet. His brother is a PA state trooper and was a really good guy too. I hadn't talked to him for years before that happened but we were pretty good friends in school
