Tool kit

Hello, still dont have my boat but the bank says any day now. But i am trying to get ready i am looking at getting a tool kit any suggestions. should i get metrics. Wanted to check with the pros before wasting my money. Thanks for all your help

    You are going to want both Metric and SAE. I got a decent set at Lowes on Black Friday a few years ago. It has deep well's along with standard depth sockets. The kit also came with open end and box end wrenches. I think it was a 200 piece set. I keep that under my forward berth mattress. I have a smaller kit with an adjustable wrench, flat and phillps head screwdrivers, pliers, needle nose pliers, wire cutters and a good quality (Klein) wire stripper/crimper. I stress good quality on that one because the cheap ones tend to bend or not set correctly. Both sets are in soft sided bags, which makes for easier storage.

    I also have a small collection of stainless nuts and bolts of various sizes and lengths. I keep "butt" splices and wire connectors in there as well. I also keep some marine grade wire on hand for a "just in case" situation.

    Multi-meter is a must and not to be a wise guy learn how to use it.. A pick up tool is very helpful also. Either magnetic or gripper type. Flashlight and spray lube (WD-40). Pump pliers (Channel locks). Spare fuses.

    If you do get tools from Sears, avoid the screwdrivers.  After a couple years, the plastic handles smell like vomit.  

    Get a good cordless drill.  I have a Ryobi set with the inflator shown below.  Fantastic tool ... it will inflate a floatie chair in no time, and deflate it when you're done.  I keep the drill, inflator, charger and a spare battery on board at all times.

    Ditto on LaRea on Craftsman screwdrivers. Horrible smell in the tool box. I had to throw mine away, it's that bad. Plus they aren't comfortable to use.

    I find the tool I use most often is a stubby ratchet screwdriver with bits that store in the handle.

    Don't get me wrong, I carry a full set of tools.  But it seems most times I can do what I need to do with a short screwdriver or a multi-tool.

    Keep an eye out for Sears to put their craftsman sets on sale again. They just had everything marked down last week and could get 165 piece set for $30.

    I bought a 300 piece Husky tool kit last year, just to carry when I go boating, dirt biking, or driving the Mustang. It has pretty much everything in it, and is in a smallish case. I think it was in sale for $90.

    Nice kit but no room for it plus the other tool box I have for the rest of the needed items.

    that is a nice kit- they had them on sale once at Christmas ( maybe fathers day ) and I missed it....I have a pretty decent one that is the fold out style which has a lot of stuff...when I'm serious I take my regular tool box..it has two hammers.

    I got a Kobalt tool kit on black Friday a few years ago. It is probably too big for the boat. I took it out of it's hard case and put all of the wrenches and sockets in a soft sided canvas bag so it would fit in a smaller area.
