Boat fire - dock neighbor

Unfortunate event this past weekend with the boat that slips across from us.  My understanding is it started in the engine room.  All crew were picked up safely.

Looks like they were out on the water when it happened.  Any ideas on cause?

I haven't heard cause.  It was him and his wife on board I think.  He was a fishing charter captain as well.

Yikes! I've seen a few burn over the years. A couple on purpose and one not. When that gel coat etc. gets going it's pretty intense. Happy they're safe.

Makes me really want to look into my fireboy system...I don't truly know the status of my extinguisher bottle and charge.

Man, glad they are safe!  That is the important part.  Did the boat sink or did they get it put out before sinking?  @Skennelly - definitely take the time to look over your extinguisher, both the automatic one and the hand held ones.  I'll say, you never think that this could happen to yourself, but....

@Dream_Inn - It didn't sink...they were able to tow it to the launch ramp and onto a trailer.

All my hand helds are brand new just replaced by the Kidde recall.

same here.  Even have an extra one after I bought one for $1 at a garage sale.  Turned it into Kidde recall, now it's a new spare too.

I replaced 4 - 2 home and 2 marine. And I got an extra red back.

Take your fire boy to licensed fire extinguisher services and they will weight and check the trigger

It did sink...this is what was left when they raised it and towed it in.

@TonyG13 - Boat is out of Waukegan harbor...happened a few miles out.  Yeah it's been kept quiet.  I only know cause I'm out of Waukegan too.

Probably because that chemical plant explosion took precedence in the news cycle. Now that was something. Would really like to know what caused that blast.

Wow. Explosion? Really?  People would have got hurt if it was an explosion.

@MarkB - TonyG13 is referring to a chemical plant in Waukegan that literally blew up this past week.  There were some fatalities.

I hear ya. Bought our boat a few months ago, took this pic of the Fire Boy 😳 called HQ and got the name of a company here....can be pricey to refresh! These need to be redone at most every 6 years, but closely monitored for sure. Stay safe!

A fire like that with your family on the boat would be extremely scary. Glad everyone is safe

I ran into the owner at the harbor the other day and talked with him.  Boat was a 1990 and didn't have a fireboy or auto system of any kind.  They went through 3 extinguishers trying to put it out.

Believed to be an electrical cause.

Insurance took care of him...he is searching for a replacement boat.
