Hole in outdrive

Hello everyone, noticed this hole when prepping outdrive.  What should I use to fill and should I be worried about water intrusion?

thank you in advance.

Is that the hole for the speedo?

That’s the water intake for your speedometer, water pressure works the gauge on the dash.

I have never seen that before.  Then why do I have a pitot tube?

It’s possible your drive isn’t being used for the speedo and someone installed the pitot. When you get a chance look at your drive and compare to the pic below. This tube is at the top back of the lower unit. Pressure from the hole sends pressure up the tube to the gauge.

If the tube is missing or just not connected, water will spray out the hole on top.

30psi should be 30mph. Shot it with a little air and the speedo will jump. I have to clean mine out every fall.

A twist of a drill bit 1/8 or less in your fingers tends to clear some build up too.

What I think he is saying is he has a white pitot tube mounted to the transom that runs his speedo. Cleaning out the hole won’t do anything for him.

Either way, that is hole is definitely normal.  No need, nor should you, do anything to it. :)

Or the lower was replaced with newer model but he originally had a transom pickup
    or the reverse situation

I will look today @aero3113!  Guessing if I trim up I can see that?

Ha, I was freaking a bit when I saw it.  It must have been so clogged and painted over I never saw it as I sand and paint the drive every spring.

Think I can get it reconnected?  Pitot tube does not work great either.  Just replaced it last spring as well.

    Thanks everyone!

How do you clean yours out?  Just clear the hole or the whole tube?

Yes, with the drive up you will see that. Also along with the tube connector shown in the picture above, there is a male end that is installed on the drive side. Both pieces are available online if needed.

Its supposed to be there. Mine was clogged and I had absolutely zero success trying to unclog, so my speedo never registered.

As I suggested try a small drill bit, twist gently with your fingers. Have someone watch the speed and blow some air into it.

thanks @aero3113 and @icoultha.  I need to investigate to where the pitot tube runs to.  Does it go straight to speedometer or connect with old tube that went to the drive.

I remove my drives every winter. But it can be cleaned out while on the boat. Raise the drive all the way up remove the tube by moving the tab to the right and wiggle up on the tube. I take a 10 inch piece of wire(actually from and old sending unit) slide it down the hole and spin with my fingers and same in the front hole then shot it with a little compressed air. The tube comes though the transom just above the yoke there is a quick disconnect there. From there is usually a strait shot to  the gauge. I assume this is where they tapped in to yours.
