over heating

I have a 2005 FV 320 with 5.0 . I haven't run the oat for a while a started it up to let run for a while at idle . After about 15 - 20 minutes I could smell the engine starting to overheat . It was at 275 degrees but no alarm . I shut it down and looked at the overflow , The coolant was very low in the overflow and the line seem to have air bubbles and some coolant but not overflowing . Any suggestions on what to look for

    Bad raw water pump: that's where I would start.

    Yes, I'd start at the impeller on the raw water pump as well. Did you have good water flow out the exhaust? Even with closed cooling you still need the heat exchange with the raw water. Also check the coolant level, you may have some kind of air lock.

    Good point by DI. You did run it with muffs and water, right?

    Yes I did . It's in the water .  It checked the strainers and there wasn't any water flow . Impeller is where I'll start and see from there . Thanks for the suggestions I'll let you know
