Im replacing my thermostats (I don’t know when they were last replaced). Do you guys use any type of sealant on the gasket? I know the gasket has the metal rings for the senders, obviously I wouldn’t put any sealant on them.

I did not use any extra sealant. I did have a small leak which was from not torquing one of the bolts enough. Other than that it was an easy repair.

Many gaskets are not meant to be used with sealant. I beleive these are in that category.

I went ahead and installed my port side thermostat last night with no sealant, I can tell none was used on what I took off. I will do the starboard sometime this week.

Put it back together the way it came off- unless the way it was put on was the problem!

If both mating sufaces are clean and new gasket is used id not worry about any sealer,  i myself would have probably still used a little glaze of sealer on each side of the gasket because I'm ocd and have plenty of sealer on hand at all times.

My thermostat housing top came off clean without tearing gasket so i filled raw water cooled engine with antifreeze, put in my new thermostat and installed top with a little sealler reusing the gasket.  I kept the new one as a spare.
