Look on the side of your windlass and get the make/model.  Their web site will tell you sizes for the rope and chain.  Make sure to get exactly the size of chain they specify ... BBB, G4 or whatever.

And if a Simpson Lawrence check if a number on the side of the gypsy. Can have two identical windlass's with different Gypsy's so different chain and rode.

The windlass os a horizon 600

Im a little confused I looked at a few sites one stated 1/4 in chain and 9/16 rode
another 5/16 chain and 1/2 in rode
can anyone tell me what they have on their 270

It depends on your gypsy. There should be a number stamped on the side of it. Then check here. Chart with sizing on page 24.

Can be hard to make out. Should be on the open side of the gypsy. A flashlight will help. Or take a pic with phone and enlarge.

Hope you tied a float to the rode so you can go back someday and retrieve it.

Based on the PDF that @Willhound posted:

Measure the distance between teeth on the gypsy.  It should be either 1" or 1.25".  It might be tough to measure exactly, but you only need to know whether it's 1" or 1.25".

If it's 1", you need 1/4" BBB chain and 1/2" rope.  If it's 1.25", you need 5/16" BBB chain and 9/16" or 5/8" rope.  Looks like you could substitute G4 chain instead of BBB chain (the difference being that a link of G4 is slightly longer than a link of BBB).

Worst case, buy one foot of 5/16" BBB chain and see if it fits.
