  Are you sure?  I think they stand for straight and tapered.  When mixed together, you apparently only get a few threads holding them together.  See link below.  Thanks.

  You are correct but there are more than a few threads holding with the tapered threads

  Brass is soft. It allows for some flex.  
  
  An engineers by the book method and real life method sometimes don't mesh.

  OK, but would you agree that tapered should be used with tapered and straight should be used with straight.  My original question still stands, does anyone know if the threads shown in the pic (for a genset seacock on a Rinker) are straight, tapered or mixed?  Thanks.
