Maintenance/ Tune up Volvo Penta

John41John41 Member Posts: 115 ✭✭
I own a 342 FV. I’d like to start purchasing everything I need for both engines, outdrives and Generator so I’m ready for spring. The question I have is should I use Volvo parts for the tuneup or am I ok with the cheaper tuneup kit? I have the Volvo Penta 5.7 osi df. The outdrives are Volvo Penta ocean X and a kholer generator. Any part numbers you have would be appreciated.

I found this publication out of Australia that is a goldmine of V-P part numbers.

It's usually better to use genuine V-P parts except in cases when they are attempting grand larceny. One example is an idle air control valve genuine part at $325. Equivalents can be found on Amazon for a fraction of that price. Distributor caps and rotors are AcDelco typically used on GM small blocks. I replaced the spark plugs on my 5.0 OSi-EF with NGK V-Power TR52238's and the engine has never run better. Do a bit of research and you can save money, but if in doubt go with the genuine part. Andy

I would have thought people more knowledgeable than me would chime in so I didn't say anything.

I would use genuine Volvo for the engine or parts that Volvo recommends. For things like filters or an impeller I use sierra. Can you post the tune up kit you are referring to, it would help with suggestions?

My buddy has twin Volvo 5.0 and he uses Napa parts for the basics. Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, oil filter. Agree Sierra for water pump and impeller. Not sure on fuel filters. I do know that he struggled to align part numbers so you’ll need to do some homework.

That looks pretty good, hopefully 8 plugs and not 4. Any reviews?

I'm not a fan of ebay however that doesn't mean it's bad. Most importantly who is the seller and do the reviews look good. Make sure it's not from some Chinese seller and juts because it's from a US seller doesn't mean it isn't chinese garbage. Look into the seller outside of ebay such a as website or reviews.

Beware of sellers like this who imply the part is genuine V-P. He does admit near the bottom of the page it's not OEM, however the fact he paints it red and shows a picture with a V-P package is sketchy as heck. Caveat emptor. Andy

That listing is shady. May be red or black and may have a black or brass tip. How about you just advertise the part your selling and not make a listing that may or may not reflect the part being sold.
