Microwave Surround

Any ideas on what I can use to finish off this edge around the microwave? The previous owner had a new microwave installed but never finished it off.

    I had a similar situation on my 310 and I just stained the plywood to be as close as possible to the veneer. But what about the veneer tape? Just use that over the plywood?

    You can buy edge covering material specifically for covering the end of plywood and glue it on.

    I'm glad you started this thread. I have the same need to cover the cabinet edge since I recently removed the little-used microwave to give me more storage.  Andy

    Home Depot sells 3/4” angle aluminum in gloss black. It would be perfect.

    Or get it in Al color, looks good and will be close to stainless.

    I'd be concerned with the curved corners and the edging.  You probably won't be able to follow tbe curve without it cracking.  Maybe...maybe not.  And then I'd wonder if the glue will hold in the corners.  Probably need to use a heat gun to activate the glue

    I was thinking the same. I would like to find a type of rubber “U” channel that’s close to color to slip over the edge. It would be able to go around the corner, maybe not as tight but it should work.

    I would take an oscillating tool or jigsaw and square off the corners.

    It will be hard to get a nice cut.  You'll jack it up.

    I'd square it off like @YYZRC said and either match up with pre finished or stain to match some 90 degree trim from your favorite local indoor lumber yard.

    It won’t matter. The aluminum will cover the cut surfaces. 

    Here’s where I used the aluminum in my house to frame a TV insert. Used a mitre saw to get the angles perfect.

    I would not use a jigsaw.  The blade might grab the edge of the veneer and crack it.  An oscillating multi-tool will do it easily.  Start the cut with the blade motion parallel to the surface of the veneer.  Cut through the veneer, then plunge cut the rest of the way through.

    I have also used double sided tape on the back of the angle aluminum - you could do this and have it offset from the edges of the wood slightly to allow for the rounded edges. Then you wouldn’t have to trim anything.

    I think a better option would be to trim it out from the outside if that makes sense.  Meaning buy some flat trim and make a picture frame style around it.  I would not try to cut the existing cabinet.  I don't think Norm Abrams could do that cleanly

    at $16 i would look at seeing just how flexible this is.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KWJR0VU?ref=em_1p_0_im&ref_=pe_2313370_576877010 I was looking into this for similar reasons in when i was putting in a bar in the TV area.  I was really concerned with how to deal iwth the edges and how to get the finish to match. If it doesn't work you aren't out a lot of money and can still go the route that others recommended.

    I removed my neighbors microwave in his SR today and this is what I found. It actually looks pretty good. If he can’t find an exact match microwave he’ll have it showing.
