Product review: Underhill Big Gulp manual bilge pump

I knew my manual bilge pump was worn out after it wore out my shoulders pumping water during a boat rescue last fall.  Today I learned that this $55 pump is the safety tool I should have bought years ago.  (I have no connection to the company.)

Need to move water in a hurry?  I had the venerable West Marine pump found on boats across North America.  On the Underhill pump, the cylinder measures 30x2 inches compared to 24x1.75 for the WM pump.  What a difference!  It emptied a 5-gallon bucket of water in just 15 strokes and 45 seconds, compared to 45 strokes and 90 seconds for the old pump.

Twice as fast?  Yes please.

And for emptying nuisance water from the bilge, it drained the bucket down to under 1/4". The WM pump wouldn't go below 3/4".

The pump feels well-built.  The top and bottom can be unscrewed for cleaning.  And the see-thru pump body adds transparency, so to speak.

Now, this review is not all puppies and rainbows.  The hose connector is a barb fitting, where I'd rather see a screw fitting for a positive connection.  And for $55, it should include storage clips for the hose, like the old one. No matter -- the old pump is going to the landfill.

    Most importantly was the strokes were 66 percent less. Imagine having to continually be pumping water and how tired you would be with the other pump.

    A friend and I pumped about 50 gallons out of his jetski.  It was brutal.  I never thought about my manual bilge pump, until the day I needed it.

    How was a jet ski still floating with 50 gallons of water in it?!

    @LaRea

    Good review, I buggered up my old hand pump working on a household sump pit. Sucked up a few small rocks. It still works - but not well....

    I'll order one.
