windless on my 05 320 FV doesnt go up with

my windless when we try to raise it up, it seems to skip and drops back and goes back up , but struggles . After a few trips of the breaker and reset and then finally raising it out of the water. Can it be the clutch needs to be tight or is the control arm needs to be replaced? There is no tension on the control arm.

  • I’d start with tightening the clutch.  Not uncommon for it to occasionally needing to be tightened.

    Windlass....

    @Spyderweb as per above.
    Sounds like first thing - is to tighten clutch to get more grip on the anchor rode/line.

    Go from there.

  • ok thanks , thats what I was going to do first as it is the easy fix.

  • ok tightened clutch ran anchor up and down, still skipping as it comes up. The control arm seems to be not holding so I put duct tape down to see if its the control arm, it seems to stay on tract but when duct tape lifted the chain started to skip again. So next step is to replace it. Does anyone know what one to use and how to remove the old one and install the new one? It seems you have to take the housing off the unit.

    Parts are hard to find, it could be the tension spring on the arm, as you've pointed out. But here's a parts diagram that might help. I'm not sure if I can post the whole PDF but if you PM me your email address I can send it to you.

  • Is it only skipping on the chain part of the rode, but it works okay on the rope?  If so, maybe your gypsies (the two ridged wheels that grab the chain) are worn out.  It could also mean you have the wrong size chain.  The chain size needs to match the gypsies.

    If you look up the manual for your model of windlass, it will specify the chain sizes that will work.  Then look at the chain for stamped markings.
