Drive trim DOWN doesnt work in N, but does work in FWD or RV

Onward we go with repairs...

Anyone had this happen to them?

For a long time now the only way to get the drive up has been to hit the trailer mode button (the second click on the trim up button).. now it simply doesnt work going down at all, unless you move it into FWD or Reverse..

Going to wait till I get it out of the boat yard to fix it as I'm already over by a week.. just wondering if it's a simple connection problem, or a much bigger issue.

It’s Sounds like an intermittent connection at the switch possibility. But when you have to hit the trailer switch it’s usually a puck adjustment or replacement.

I would check the connections because that sounds strange. Check the switch and the connections at the transom.

My up only works up in trailer...al said it was the limit switches, perhaps bucks as @aero3113 mentioned...

Just wondering why the connections at the transom would make it so there's no DOWN in N.. but it does move down in FWD/RV ... it will go UP at any position.. forgot to add that in there.

Just something to check, corrosion on the connections could make it do strange things. But it could be a loose wire or connection in the binnicle.

  • I just went through some strange intermittent issue on my trim. I suspected the switch at first, but it ended up being the bad ground connection at the pump/relay frame due to terrible corrosion. Worth a look.

I will have to do that this week. It now refuses to go down.. luckily I only lifted it for 1/2 a second today to see if it would go back down..

Just in case it's up forward in the helm, does anyone know what to search for in order to get parts? Or at least a parts diagram?

    The shifter in question..

Open up the little hatch under it and see if there’s any connectors you can disconnect and inspect.

Looks like only 2 screws holding it on if you want to remove it.

  • I would rule out the pump ground, and trim relays first as that switch is a PIA.

Here is the pump and two trim relays... check the connections and in particular the ground wire(s) on the frame. on the picture below the grounds are all attached at the top with the three black wires.

If it is corroded or dirty at all then clean that up.

The two relays are also susceptible to failure. They are the same relay as the motor starter solenoid, so worth having one as a spare.

    Hope that helps.
