Oil extractor

Well, as always a five min job....went to change the oil...I have the tube that goes to the pan...but don't recall I used that before. Just did the dip stick....pump i have used before that runs off my drill was toast. Found a replacement at home depot that listed for water or oil and the dipstick- came with the smaller inlet for that- but could not get it to draw much oil- water was fine.  Special trick I've missed? Manual ones better? Did get the radio working again...

    Did you warm up the oil?

    Yep...got up to temp...plus it's 85 degrees here today...my last boat had the oil tube..it was connected to the drain plug so you'd just pull it through and drain..guess I will figure out how to get it through the drain hole..pina.

    My 350s on the 342 had threads at the top of the dipstick. Extractor screwed on to the top of the dipstick to suck through that tube.

    That’s what mine have. Starboard sucks quicker than port. Port sucks some air, one day I’ll reseat the dipstick tube and maybe put some sealant on it when I do it.

    Ras that might be. I'd get some air too like Aero said but for the most part it would suck er out in minutes when the oil was hot. Here is what I used:

    I have the screw type dipstick top but I did notice it wasn't sealed to the dipstick tube and would suck lots of air.

    Yeah, I have a bucket one with a motor as well that I modified to hold more since my engines hold over 8 quarts each.  It will now hold both motors worth.  I've been using it for over 20 years, so it definitely has paid for itself!  I remember the drill ones and remember issues with them.  My grandfather had them back with his boat and had lots of problems with suction.  The hand pump ones, from what I hear, work really well and are quick.

    when you had the motor out you should have installed a drain hose

    Have one  of those Shureflow bucket extractors & it does not work very well at all & no longer use. Have drain hose attached to drain plug & have been using that for a long time. My son bought one of those vacuum pumps from Harbor freight that you connect to air compressor to suck out oil. Going to try next year.

    I have the hose/drain plug just a pain to get thru the drain plug hole...I may take my shop vac to it- time for a new one anyway...

    If you have the hose drain plug, then you should definitely make an adapter to use that.  That will be the best and easiest way to get all the oil out.  I have a hose that is the right size that squeezes over the top of that drain plug hose.  Nothing fancy, but works well.  No special adapters needed, just correct size hose.

    Depending on if you have some access to the drain plug area something like this might be of interest. Really considering getting two for my 454's but the 12 volt oil sucker through the dipstick has worked out with warm oil for years. I have these valves on two of my trucks and think it is great idea.
