Water pump rebuild

I know lots of you replaced your raw water pumps with Hardin but I have rebuilt mine with the ware plate (s?) and special height impeller. Guess it worked pretty well as I'm just now re doing..but can't find record of it anywhere...I do a search and it looks like plenty on the market...but don't see what I recall I purchased before...one oblong looking wear plate, impeller, rubber seal ..and I thought another big plate for the main side of the pump for wear also...this is the all metal pump..I was thinking it called gen 2 but all I'm seeing is gen 7?

    It's the oem...all brass I recall...I had posted it on here but not a thread I can find..

    If it's all brass (main housing and backing plate), there is no wear plate.

    Most people replace the backing plate with the composite version which has a replaceable wear plate.

    I have used the kits from Aftermarket Marine in Louisiana in the past. They allow you to keep your original brass backing plate. I dont know if they are still around but a google search would answer that question for you.

    You know that actually sounds familiar @earl1z19 but nothing like it comes up- my guy actually had a fishing store of some sort too...just seems like there was a thin plate, maybe factory, that was supplied, for wear on the other end of the new plate. My pump will lose suction from wear on either side of the shaft before it breaks veins. None of the kits I see have other than the one plate. Other than the bearing not really anything else to go wrong. Not dropping a boat buck on a fancy chrome one when I can fix this one for 50 bucks..

    OK, so far I have learned from wrong parts ordered, I think, there were two different covers for the pump. Apparently one is designed with a replacable wear plate and one is smooth. The wear plates are self explanatory , the smooth I suppose would have to go to a shop to be ground if your doing it right I'd think. The kit I found before it did not matter it just had a plate that covered the whole thing. So, the wear plate i just ordered probably will not work with my version so will need to get mine pulled and see what I have...

    Just buy the new version of the back with the wear plate. It’s under $100. I got two used ones for under 100.

    Lord I hate the thought of plastic there..or anywhere which I'm sure the newer motors have everywhere. I hooe to pull mine am- I don't think the additional plate is going to work on mine. I did find a plate ivthink will work with the new impeller but need to get it pulled and confirm exactly what I have to work with..

    So I got the pump out..that impeller was toast- the wear plates were really not bad- I'm going to flip them over and get it back together..

    Those wear plates are stainless and way more durable than the brass

    Well...that did not work- the pump is not 100% symmetrical.  So, the plate won't flip. Close...I thought about opening up the holes a bit...so, grabbed the old belt sander and turned it in to a grinder...the groving was not to deep and it cleaned up nicely. I will have to figure out the next time plates for both ends...I hate that plastic replacement.

    I would think you could have a machine shop laser cut those for you out of stainless. Did you find the correct impellor to use? I know they are a few thousands narrower to compensate for the thickness of the wear plates on both ends. Do you have a part # by chance?

    So, @earl1z19, the kit I ordered which was merc came with the adjusted impeller, new micky mouse o ring and the smaller diameter spacer.  I know when I ordered that kit from American aftermarket it came with the large plate that governed the whole back cover and then that had a pretty thick rubber gasket behind that- I could not flip that back piece with modifying the holes, plus was not sure if adding the back wear plate and the gasket would work with the impeller- so I belt sanded the back piece to get it smooth again. I have it all together and hope to install and test it today!

    I hope that works out well. I was smart enough to order an extra kit from Aftermarket Marine a few years back. I keep it just incase.
