She's back in the water for the season..........AND she's leaking.

I'll tell ya, I will never own another I/O after this FV 270. I love the boat, but this I/O is just so darn frustrating. Spend 1000's a year on her but STILL there's a leak.  Does anyone want a 2004 FV 270 for like 20k ? I might be willing to let her go. I'm sure this fix is simple but in the keys nothing is simple.

Any ideas where this leak might be coming from?

The seal on the ransome assy is crap- I had mine apart- it's kind of a spongy seal and not a lot of tourqe - being in the keys do you think you struck anything or run aground? Seems like you had the transom replaced at some point? Hard to see your picture- I believe the water pick up for the out drive comes thru there- I don't recall how the line is secured....is the leak in the steering pin?

Digging around a little more, this appears to be the first place you can see the water..

The steering pin area doesn't look great.. wonder if this is the dreaded pin leak.

If it is that, someone may be able to pick this boat up cheap, and I'll go find another day boat. I'm not going to mess w/ finding another mechanic, etc etc.

Well that aint good. Will see if we can ride it out for 5 or 6 months and fix or if it needs to be pulled sooner. Either way, gotta get a boat just like the 270 but without boards for next year.

It looks dry though. Stick a shop vac in there so you can see the area better.

Id clean out all that crud and wipe clean.  Then hit everything with a thick coat of spray antiperspirant deodorant.   It will dry white revealing any possible leak.

There is a kit where you can replace the pin from the outside.  Requires cutting but could be done on a trailer or lift.  Very diy fix.

With the constant salt in the air I'd find some sort of of thin coating to keep everything sprayed down under the engine hatch.

A leaking steering pin is no big deal until the pin rusts so much that the steering becomes loose. That process takes several years, even in salt water.

Didn't you replace the transom asy? That should have included a new steering pin...

ughh dam. def have lose steering, but when the mechanic looked into it he said it was at the wheel, he showed me how the wheel turns but the arm in the back doesn't.

Yes, about 7 years ago now was when everything got swapped around. Going to look into it more this weekend.

Going to gently get that stuff cleaned out, don't want to make it worse !

Every cable steering setup has slop.

if its the steering pin you can move the drive back and forth and feel the slop

The slop isn’t always the steering pin. Mine has a little play at the hole that the pin goes through for the steering arm on the hydraulic ram. When I first got the boat, I replaced the clevis pin that was warm also and it helped some.

Leak is gone.. will see if it comes back after a trip to the sandbar and back.. if it comes back we'll pull her out and get her fixed correctly. If not, next summer she gets fixed..

Steering pin I would think should last for some time. My out drive drifts a lot- even with all new stuff- drives me crazy.

Well that's not very encouraging.  I plan to overhaul my outdrive and replace the steering pin and hoping to remove a lot of slop.  Hmmm....

You can try to tighten up the pin by re-torque the two bolts. I can’t remember the torque value but should be easily found. If loose this will take care of some slop.

Her are the torque values, note 2 sizes of nuts

If I recall  that is basically a u bolt- so the slop is not front to back it is free play in the steering which as far as I know there is no adjustment for...like the cable needs adjusting
Sorry we have hijacked Jeff's thread!

It's all good, the leak has stopped for now.. just needed a little help from mother nature? This happened on the other boat as well, the actual leak must be so small that any kind of growth fills it in. Will check to see if it comes back, if it does, we'll make it a priority, if not, next summer.. I really love this boat setup, it's perfect in every way, other than this darn out drive that it has on it.

knowing that it has a leak that's been stopped by bottom growth must be reassuring for you...

It's Florida keys growth so at least it's tropical.

Temps have varied from almost 60 to down in the 20 all week  Pretty sure I've lost one of my young palm trees already this winter...and it's not even officially winter yet.

As soon as I win the lottery I'll be down there near you.

I'm willing to bet the snapper are bitting within a 20 minute boat ride from Jeff....and there's zero chances of frostbite.

The snow mobiles sound fun.  Never ridden on one. Used to be a couple old ones sitting around my grandparents home in PA my sister and I would play on. I think one still had functional headlights. That's the closest we've come.

been a beautiful weekend, even with the rain, have been splitting the time between the rinker and the egg harbor, both in the water, both ready to go.. life is good man :) really want to stay here for christmas, trying to get the fam to make a last min change to get out of drone land and come down to sunny Florida. Temperature and wind have been amazing.

I feed some big fish right off the back of the boat at the dock.. not sure what kind they are.. all beautiful I guess. The EH has a family of nurse sharks that live right near it.. see them all the time, 5 or so.. about to give them some publix fried chicken.. they love this stuff.
