Fuel Sniffer

I am going to install a Gas Fume detector and alarm on my 270. It seems it should be wired so it is live whenever the Boat is on. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I should pull power from. I am thinking right off the ignition switch but there may be better.

    I think it should be powered on all the time. If it’s to the ignition, you turn the key too far to start without thinking, it’s too late. Boom!

    The family got me this one. There was another boat fire down south here this weekend. Heck I sniff, run blowers and still act like a mobster starting his car.

    @mbnarney it’s uses batteries or 12 volt? That might be nice to replace my clock with. What’s the diameter?

    Wouldn’t the fumes be low in the engine compartment and bilge though? How accurate are they mounting them up on deck?

    I'd second keeping it live all the time, same for co2 detectors in the cabin.  

    And as low as you can get without worry if water reaching it in the bilge.

    There is a sensor, an alarm and a control. The sensor is mounted in the bilge and the control is mounted at the helm 2 1/16" .  Its 12v.

    I would not wire the fume detector to be always on. Apart from battery drain, it would be annoying af if your boat was alarming bothering everyone on the dock while you are at home oblivious. 

    I agree that CO alarms should be powered at all times.

    I'd hope if someone at the dock hears an alarm going off and I'm not at the boat, they call me to say something is up!  

    If there's a gas leak on board she's one poorly flicked cigarette away from a bad weekend at the marina

    I put one on my 270 I would test it with a little bit of paint thinner in a bottle capm

    I am going to mount my control at the helm where the spotlight controller used to be. I now use a wireless remote for that. My boat is on a rack so no one is going to hear the alarm. Its south Florida so if they did hear it they would ignore it like the hundreds of car alarms going off. Seriously it sounds like I need to wake it up when I turn the battery's on. Where would I wire that to?

    I'd want it on the same circuit as my bilge pump so that it can never be turned off.  The power consumption is only 60 milliamps (similar to a Mercathode).
