Starlink on the boat

How many of you are using the Starlink mini on your boats, and what success have you had with it?  I just recently cut the cord at the house, and got Starlink.  I'm loving it SO much, I will most likely get a mini to use in the RV and boat.  Also.....if any of you are on the fence on getting Starlink, I can send you a referral code, and you will get a FREE month ($120) just for signing up.  Yes, I will get a free month also.  It's a cool program they have!  I got my home system for a whopping $89 bucks!  The next cheapest I found was $349 at Best Buy, which was normally $499.

    How fast is it?  My son is usually gaming at home while we are streaming on the TV.  I'm also probably on the Wi-Fi browsing marketplace for deals I shouldn't be buying all at the same time

    I have the Starlink Gen 2 with the Yaosheng PoE injector to eliminate the Starlink router and allow it to run on 12v. I also modified the dish so that the motors are deactivated.

    Works great. Highly recommend.

    I’m planning on Starlink Roam for the boat next season. Is mini a different system?

    “Roam” is the service (no fixed address). “Mini” is the size of the dish.

    Mini is the one that most use to roam, because it is MUCH smaller!  
    My residential setup is blazing fast.  My son can do gaming, wife on zoom, and we have 5 TV's streaming on it

    Just another thought for everyone. 

    We planned on using starlink on the boat however I found a much cheaper way to get internet especially since our data usage on the boat isn't very much. I bought a portable hotspot and got 2 free sims from our cellular provider Google Fi. These just use the data along with our phone plan. I use my wife's SIM in the hotspot since she only uses about 5 gb a month which leaves us 95 gb for the boat each month. The only coat to me was the hotspot which I got for about $250 as I bought a refurbished Netgear off of Amazon and no monthly cost for network. 


    This hotspot can also connect to Wi-Fi at the marina or my friends boats who have starlink and then my hotspot will use that data rather than cell network and I don't need to try and reconnect all my devices to a new wifi network.

    Where I anchor there is no cell service but cellular works great at the dock. We didn’t boat much this summer so I didn’t activate the Starlink.

    I have a question about starlink- once all the satellites are up and running, where is the competition for the internet? Just price? We have att 5g at the house- I think that is 50 bucks. Obviously apples and oranges as if I'm on the water i have mobile internet vs satellites- does that not seem to create a monopoly however?

    So far, in my area,  at&t and charter offer faster internet for the same price or a little less depending on current special offers.

    Unfortunately in our area Duke energy who supplies our power also now owns our natural gas supply...which I think is an absolute monopoly.  

    Delta dental (insurance company) has funding and scholarships for dental schools. Suddenly all 5 dentists agree. 

    If you want to continue down the rabbit hole

    Bears suggested you to wear dinner bells while hiking and wasps designed picnic shelters. 

    I am going to look into starlink.  We never really do much cruising, were usually stationary on the boat.  Swinging in circles all night.    

    What's the chances i buy the residential package they notice im using the Internet an hour away from home?

    At 120 per month if I understood it correctly is a bit rich for me- but the kids being able to watch Netflix and leave me alone is sorta priceless! I'm just not out enough- you northern folks using yours way more than I have the past few years..I just tinker and clean ours.

    I've got a buddy who uses his residential setup at the lake.  He just sets his address to the GPS coordinates at the launch ramp.  Typically he'll be like 20-30 miles away while he's boating.  They've never had a problem

    So......to bump this back to the top! The latest promotion being offered for Starlink is definitely a game-changer. For most places across the USA in "rural" communities, you can get completely FREE Residential, AND a free Mini, for the cost of shipping! (typically about $21) and through my referral link, you can get a FREE month of service ($120) on the max plan. If you get both panels, you don't have to have them both on. You can leave the Mini in "standby" mode for just $5 a month, and calls/texts still work while in that mode. I'll definitely have my Mini with me on the lake at all times.
