I'm headed for a similar project- our 270 has the dingy pck so the stern seat is made so underneath you can set the outboard. Problem is, it has a vent that goes down into the bilge. Water that cane through the seat fell onto the manifold which has a lot of rust right around the distributor- so @aero3113 , I guess it's the same job less pulling the heads? 350 mpi.. and you should show @mbnarney some of the busted knuckles earned! Im sure there was plenty of cussing at least!
@rasbury , are you going to pull the intake manifold or clean it up and paint it on the engine? If you remove it, take note to where the rotor in the distributor is pointing because the distributor will have to come out. Don’t rotate the engine, replace the distributor in the same position when it goes back in.
I did get a couple of cuts and scrapes but that comes with the job! The worst one was a clamp tail that sliced the tip of my pointer finger. Took forever to close up. Just when I thought it closed up it would open back up. You don’t realize how often the tip of your finger gets hit!
@aero3113 I'm not sure at this point. It's been there "cooking" for some time and I just have not been able to devote the time- heck, even use the boat but I see some light at the end of the tunnel. We have had 5 years now of dealing with hospitals, doctors and therapy for our granddaughter. So, my "retirement" plans ,although greatly altered, may somewhat happen!
Was planning on finishing everything up today. Went to install the exhaust manifolds and didn’t like what I saw. Looks like some water was making its way in, couldn’t tell if there was a crack but didn’t want to take any chances. I also saw some salt crystals in there. Luckily there was one set of risers/manifolds left at the shop where I get my parts from. I’ll probably install the new ones next week. These manifolds and risers were installed August of 2020.
I looked back at the start- looks like that manifold would not be as bad a job as I'm thinking. I can't mark the distributor as I'm sure i would need to replace the manifold. My motor is coolant cooled which was on my list minimum. You have plenty of time to be picky on the repair!
I swapped all of the fittings and installed the plugs that came with the new kit. As you can see, one of the elbows was starting to get plugged up. It looks much worse in the picture but definitely glad it’s getting replaced.
I forgot to post this pic. One of the holes for the drain in the exhaust manifold was starting to clog also. It wasn’t packed tight, just sitting there. I wonder if this is from when I descaled the engines this past spring.
