Maximum weight on the swim platform?

ThellThell Member Posts: 37 ✭✭

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a small jet ski on to my platform. I have a 320 Fiesta vee. Do you know the weight limit on the swim platform?

Regards,

Martin

I think you'll have 2 problems: weight limit on the platform and the added weight on the transom might kill your getting up on plane.

    190 kilo or 418 pounds. It's like 2,5 adults. :-)

Add whatever weight davit/chocking system you need to secure it too. How will you get it on/off?

my dinghy and 9.9 he is 200lbs.  Plus fuel.  The trunk has about about 100 more pounds.  Even with full fuel water gear and four adults I have no issue getting on plane with 5.0s.

However, I would add two more stantions to support the swim platform.  Should be no problem for you.

I think it's doable - Not too much heavier than putting a 65Q cooler on the platform. Of course, my platform is molded on, so it's likely beefier, and there's no way for water to dam under it.

I've been eyeing up the small jet type dinghy/boat.  But I think hauling around 700+lbs is a bit too much for the swim platform.  That new davit really has people thinking though!  I love how it's removable.

I have a 11' dinghy with a 15hp on it.  I would be nervous about any more weight on those swim platform braces.  I have actually thought about adding another on mine in the center.  I don't get flex as far as i can tell, but it definitly doesn't feel as solid as other platforms i have been on, particularly the molded ones.  However they typically aren't as big either.

I tell you i have been looking at alot of Ocean Yacht and Viking 48s and my biggest nuance with most of the boats i'm finding are the small platforms.  I would miss mine for certain.

Like BD said, consider the effect on weight balance.  Your bow will be pointed towards the sky.  Here's an easy experiment:  Put 2.5 friends on the swim platform, and see if the boat can still get on plane.

Think your platform is strong enough?  418 pounds is like 2.5 adults at no-wake speed.  If you manage to get on plane and you hit a big wave, suddenly it's like 25 adults.

That may not be a great idea..

As I said in another thread, it is called a "swim platform" not a docking platform. @LaRea is right, static weight may be fine but consider a wake condition and not only is the integrity of the platform in question but handling and balance is a problem.

I'd maybe strap down 400 lbs of lead or something on the swim platform. I would never allow anyone to stand there while underway, especially trying to get on plane, or in choppy conditions. On my boat, no one is allowed on the platform or sun-pad while the boat is moving. Safety first.
