Any suggestions of a 5e that starts, runs and performs as it should but leaves black residue on side of boat and smells a bit rich.

You will get some exhaust (black) marks. Normal. Are your plugs fouling out?

Nope, runs just fine..  Smells a bit rich at times and can briefly smoke on startup.

I would not worry about it then. Those engine can throw some smoke at start up.

I had one that was running rich for a while (my 7.3ECW) & finally it just wouldn't stay running.  Come to find out, one valve was so tight that the cylinder was never getting compression (basically running on one cylinder).  Adjusted the valve, added a particular cleaner to the gas and all has been good.  Not saying that is the issue, but if nothing else works out.
