LED interior light, dangerous!?

I recently replaced all my interior dome bulbs with LED cob ( chips on board) bulbs.  Love the look and less draw on the batteries.   We all know the old bulbs can get hot and drain a battery if left on.  This past weekend the kids left a light on for a few hours. I noticed that burnt electrical smell and noticed a few of the LEDs were now out.  Upon removal I noticed one of the chips on the back had disconnected and some burning.  Also, the material on the face had cracked.  These are marked "CE" rated.  I'm worried.  I checked the others and put them to similar usage and the others responded the same.  There are a few vids on you tube about the electrocution and fire hazards of cheap home use LEDs. I wonder if this translates to the 12v bulbs as well in some respect.

    LEDs believe or not get very hot. Im not surprised to see burned up boards. I am wondering if they had a UL rating?

    The one in my picture do not get really hot you can handle them even after there be on for one hour.

    @Trashman, thanks for the tip, were the ones you replaced the 12 volt in the cabin?

    That's really bad.  What size where you using?  Could be too much power/heat for the small fixture.  The LEDs I bought are no longer available but I believe that these are the same.  I never had a problem with these and found them to be brighter than the stock bulbs.

    The lamps I'm referring to are the dome lights in the cabin.  I have a 270 so there are three.   The wattage I used were 12 watt.  Significantly less power draw than the stock bulbs.  The stock bulbs were way too hot, imo.  I was afraid if I left one on the fixture would melt.  There's a heat shield above the build but I still had concerns. I'm willing to try frencships bulbs.  The ones I bought are CE rated and from the info I found that's a European rating... 

    Btw, I let two of these illuminate for about four hours and 2-5 led blew out on each "bulb".

    I have used those for a year, very bright and stay cool. I didn't like the disc ones, too blue and not as bright.....these also reflect off the housing inside, so the light isnt as directional

    @BellevilleMXZ, the ones I had were warm white.  I too dislike the bright white. I see those are cob also.  The cob bulbs have the best look, imo.  Have you had any issues with these flickering?

    @frenchship those are the exact same bulb I put in my 280 this year. I've had good luck with them so far. Knock on wood

    Nope no issue.......and the one stays on for hrs at the bottom of the stairs, as its on with the upper cabin lights

    I'm pretty sure that the stock bulbs were 10W.  The LED equivalent would be less that 3W.  You have to be careful with the way LED bulbs are specified.  Sometimes they list the LED power, sometimes they list the equivalent power, and sometimes they list both.  If the bulbs you used were drawing 12W then you were actually using more power than the stock bulbs.  Consider an LED bulb around 3W so you will have more light and consume less power.

    BTW, CE rating is required for selling into European markets.  It has more to do with electromagnetic interference than safety unlike UL.

    @Handymans342 I just did a stand up comedy skit at our club. I opened up for 3 pro's with the headliner being Tony V. He is in the new Ghost Busters movie. I should have flown you in also.......LOL

    From a safety point of view, don't forget that if you change bulbs to a type which only requires 10 to 20% of the current taken previously, that the fuses or breakers should be changed accordingly. If a fault condition occurs in an LED type bulb in an old circuit it could effectively draw 10 times the design current, which would obviously be bad.
