True. At the time (mid 80s) I left because there were also no IT jobs. I may find myself back there some day but it would be on the Gulf coast this time.

LOL Thanks Handy. I worked for Raymond James for 3 years and got to spend some time in the St. Pete area now and then. We've talked about looking for a little place in Port Charlotte some day.

Port Charlotte has a lot of drug and crime issues now. Thats why we picked Cape Coral. I like Naples too.

We have friends with a second home in Sarasota and she has a sister in Port Charlotte. According to her the crime and drug issues have been a problem for quite some time. Ditto for Bradenton.

Your only access is the northern tip at the state park- really nice docks there but take it easy getting in there-shallow and lots of shoaling. There is another private dock for the homes about midway down. If you look on your chart plotter on the bay side you will see a notch cut in the side which is a channel where the docks are located. We have stayed in two of the homes which are 100% solar. There is another nice boat access park a little north of Little Gasparilla Island, nice dock and right at the beach but I can't remember the name. That area is about as far as I have been north and south, down to Upper Captiva Island. We vacationed over there 4 years in a row and stayed on those 3 islands, Cayo Costa 2x. We did that with a 21' Tahoe bowrider.....There is a lot of skinny water around there and even with the bowrider had to be mindful of the tides getting to that private dock. Great area your in. Another hidden jewel just a little north of Dunedin is Caladesi Island State Park- Great docks with shore power but again, the eater is skinny getting in there.

We are expecting to see the Halifax marina in Daytona under 11 feet of water and storm surge up to and past I 95 in some areas. Any that know the area will realize the catastrophic damage damage when you consider this will happen along 100 miles of the coast- not like when a storm hits the shore perpendicular and limits that surge. This one will be one for the records.

no gators

My mom and uncle are in Daytona in a subdivision called Pelican Bay. They are very close to 95 on the beach side of the highway. So far, they are doing well. I have a cousin who is in Ponce Inlet on the beach side and didn't evacuate. He said the power is out and the building shook a few times. The last I checked, they eye was at Daytona.

@Cableguy Greg glad to hear it but I hope your kin at the inlet understands how lucky they were- could easily have been under 10' of water there if it had come ashore as predicted. We had much much worse when the 04 hurricanes and through. Fl dodged a big bullet, however putting the beaches back together for the tourists will be in the billions. Ya'll come down and visit soon, ya hear?

...yes Ras, I saw the original tracks that showed it would probably veer more out to sea - actually where it did go and saw where it could veer back to SE Fla. but that doesn't look likely now either. Yes, FLA did dodge a bigger bullet than hit - thank goodness for that. Still a lot of damage and grief!
