  or if it would be better to just buy a stand alone GPS which one should I go with?

  I use the Navionics APP on my iPhone 6+, it works great!

  I too have the Navionics boating and skiing apps. Work well although I don;t use the boating one much given I have the plotter on the boat with Navionics map and database.

  Navionics all the way. Heavy on the battery though. I use it more as a backup to a regular gps/chart plotter.
  If you use Navionics you can preload maps for areas you frequent so you're not burning data.

  X3 on Navionics. Have on my iPhone and iPad. Really don't use my chart plotter much as i have a mount for the iPad at the helm.

  I have the Garmin BlueChart and it has been great for me.   Never tried Navtronics because I have all Garmin stuff on the boat and it's nice to be able to see the logged data on my phone and the helm screen.

  Navionics.  Its more accurate than my on board GPS...
