COIL

So after just running 455 miles on Lake Michigan over 9 days, we took the boat out for short 20 mile spin yesterday and everything was great. Today I went to the boat and the SB engine would not fire. Turn the key and it just turns and turns... No Spit, sputter, nuthin. So instantly I figured there was no spark. I put a spare plug right to the center ign wire going to the coil, grounded the plug, turned over, no spark...

First thing I looked at was the coil and noticed there was a bunch thin oil all over and also in the hole where the plug wire goes... After a little reading I learned that many coils are oil cooled (didn't know that). So, is it pretty safe to say that the coil took a dump? Do these just fail like that? Did the coil overheat?  THX

    Heat, vibration, bad luck. They can crack and fail. At least it was at the dock! How was your trip?

    I had a buddy earlier this summer have the same symptom.  First thing I did was try a different coil.  That was the problem!  His went while he was running, luckily the second engine brought him back to the dock.

    Thanks guys, I ordered a new coil since mine was leaking. Just for the heck of it I took the coil off the other engine and tried it out, it still wouldnt fire. I went thru some troubleshooting procedures in the manual and found that my ignition sensor inside the dist is probably bad. I removed it and found it to be pretty corroded. Just ordered a new one of them too.. Should have everything on Tuesday. Ill let you know when i have JOY.... PS our trip went really well and im still plannin on posting pics when i get a little time

    coils are funny critters... I've had them cough for a while, then die, and I've had them behave just as you described...

    they are isolated with an epoxy- that epoxy sometimes leaves cavities, and the cavities allows hot spots which burn them out.. most often, that is what happens to them..

    good job trouble shooting it so quickly!!!

    I also did test the coil with a multimeter, It all tests within spec so it probably does still work. None the less, it was still leaking so replacing it is still good. Hopefully she'll fire right up after i install the new sensor.

    Those cracks only appear when the coil is hot...
