I say that if you have thoughts of driving it on water back home, you really should give it a lot of consideration. I couldn't think of a better way to learn a "new to you" boat. If you have the time, it can very easily be done in a week, while enjoying the trip. Believe me, I do understand the upset stomach thinking about it (I get it before every big trip on ours). I also understand it'd be a quick cleaning and the whole moving stuff into the boat.
I remember the first day when we bought our first Rinker. It was the 310 (we previously had a SR240 - still did at the time). We signed the papers on a Friday morning, and literally had the van loaded with everything from the other boat along with groceries and other crap for a 10 day trip. We put several hundred miles on that boat those first 10 days! (with our 5 yr old and 3 yr old)
Thanks for the comments gang. @Dream_Inn you are definitely an inspiration. Your comments, along with the others on the concerns, are exactly why we are so torn. We will see, need to sit with the admiral and map it out a little. To add to this, a family friend just bought a sailboat in Bayfield, WI (near Duluth) and is sailing it home with my parents. So it would be soooooo cool to meet up with family and friends in Mackinac in May while we are all transporting new to us boats.

Just food for thought....
That's a hectic week. Figure 4 days up to Mackinac from Chicago, and 3 days down to Erie. But that does not allow for weather, and I'd want the extra time to get acquainted.
Any way you slice it, a trip like that would be amazing.
Yep we figured the same. roughly a 7 night trip with stops in Holland, Grand Traverse, Mackinac, Alpena, Detroit and then home. $2300 in fuel over 700 miles. The boat will get the same or better MPG than my 342. The good news is that in 2019 she got a brand new radar and raymarine 12" display and raymarine auto pilot.
Sounds like someone is ready to do it! Plan it for 10 days (over 2 weekends) and go for it! There's nothing better than the confidence you'll have the whole summer after that trip! It's why I plan a 300+ mile trip every June! Then, 50 or 100 miles here or there thru the rest of the summer is easy.
Handy it is a 300 gal tank so I should be able to do the trip in two tanks (although I would not let it get much below 1/3). I was estimating diesel at $3.50 but I really dont know until the gas docks open. Diesel is $2.50 - $2.60 here at the auto pumps.
We will see, the admiral and I have some talking to do
@Dream_Inn You should be used to your boat by now John
It's not about being used to the boat, it's about circumstances out of my control. Like weather, something breaking, etc. For example, on my way to VA beach last year I hit something submerged in the water and it was bad enough that it dented my big cow prop, took out my coupler and took out my drive. That was about 60 miles from home at sunset. We still enjoyed our 10 days and had new drive installed with the boat repaired 4 days later. I will say, I try not to let things like that concern me as much anymore as it used to.

That seems really good for the distance you're planing on. I was thinking that was about a 700 mile run. Even at 1MPG you'll need more than 2 tanks.
Yea she should get 1.2 - 1.3mpg at 26-28mph. Not too shabby for 22k lb
That's a lot better than my Gas with about 24k lbs The 390 Rinker on my dock gets right near 1.2mpg. Same boat as mine, just a shorter swim platform.
(We travel with them and another 400 a lot, so we make sure he is on the outside. That extra foot on the platform can be noticeable after a few drinks! LOL!)
Lol I do solemnly swear to not de rail threads on gas issues in to gas vs diesel discussion. 😃😉 sorry handy had to do it! But I am curious on the 390/410 diesel mpg.

If I remember correctly the guy in the gasser so up early gets his spot at the dock and has a beer, then a little layer the guy in the diesel shows up and has enough money left for a nice dinner for him and his wife.
@Liberty44140 - if we are doing math - instead of the new 502 gassers in my EC 360 .....putting diesels in would have cost me an extra $56,000.00. - that's a lot of dinners - even if you can pay cash for the up-grade. Even by paying cash you have $56, 000.00 out of your 401K not earning interest.
What speed is your diesel doing at wot? My EC 360 could do 50MPH - I got to the marina, my dinner was free and I was asleep before the diesel showed-up.
I'm guessing that the diesel at WOT was turning what 2500 rpm? to get 20.3 GPH?
At 3000 rpm I was using about 23 GPH and cruising at 30+ MPH.
BTW - where I boat and even down in the Caribbean diesel costs more than marine premium.
Diesel with direct drive? Well, knock another 20+ % off the performance.
Pods you say .....what is that up-grade over sterndrives, another 50K?
Boats 40 feet and less go with gas with sterndrives over that think diesel.
Too funny, I thought about commenting about the cash difference and all that, but figured nah, maybe MT will. Love ya MT! I agree with every word you said! I think you need to make it to Rinkervous this year so I can have a couple cold ones with you!!
Ok, back to topic. I think you'll love that 390. Especially the hard top!
