New heavy anchor and windlass issue

Installed a new Mattis 35 anchor recently to replace the stock 25# that came with boat.  Windlass is the Pro Series 1000.  When pulling up the anchor, as the end of the shaft end hits the outer anchor roller, it seems to often catch, and the windlass slips.  My 1st question is does this hurt the windlass?  Or is this a torque limit built into the windlass to protect the gears?  Is this a sign the new anchor is too heavy for the windlass (35# vs. 25#)?  At this point, what we're doing is if it won't ride over the roller after a couple of tries, we pull it over the roller manually, then finish with the windlass.

The gypsy has a little 3-spoke wheel on the outside.  That's the clutch nut.  Tighten or loosen it to adjust how hard the windlass pulls before the clutch starts to slip.

There is actually a little tool that goes into that wheel to help you tighten it.  Mine is in the bag of manuals.

Ah, so maybe a little tighter clutch will get it over the hump?

Yes.  If you don't have the wrench, I think it's just a 1/2-inch square drive, or you can probably tighten it by hand.  This is it:

I don’t recall ever seeing the tool in my Rinker bag (it’s up at boat now) but I did have to buy a 1/2 socket drive adaptor to change my props this spring.  I’ll bring that with me next time up to help with the tightening.  Thanks guys.

I confirmed that it's a 1/2" drive (page 11 of the manual).

Your bow roller is just not correct for that anchor, hence why it catches.

Mantus 35 is prob a bit overkill for the 330. But you can confidently anchor in a pretty good storm now.

I'd recommend an anchor swivel as well. They are tapered somewhat & glide over the roller pretty good.

BTW you're gonna love the operation of that anchor.

@Black_Diamond Been reading up on anchors, swivels etc.  Think it would help to get an anchor roller with more of a groove in the center to align the chain better?

@mattie Agree on the "bit overkill".  Anchor was a gift from our kids for Xmas.  The Mantus 25 would have been fine for the boating we do. We figured we'd keep it if it fit, and it did.  It does look like that taper on the Mantus swivel would help.  Currently "out of stock" at West Marine.

Back up to boat.  Tried tightening windlass by hand, no way.  Put the 1/2 drive in one of the sockets and easily tightened it about 1/8 turn.  End of the day, wife pulled up the anchor no problem.  It was even slightly cocked when it hit the roller, and it self righted with no hint of a slip.

We've found on multiple boats that its best to keep the windlass moving at transitions. Of course you can not always avoid it, but when the rope turns to chain and when the chain turns to anchor are transitions so if you can try to not stop on the way up at those places things work smoother. I would still consider going to a larger anchor roller if I were you.
