Upgrade to a 390

rmrstlmormrstlmo Member Posts: 232 ✭✭✭
I recently upgraded to a 2006 Rinker 390!  I've had a 340 since 2013 which I'll be selling in the spring.  This site has been invaluable to me as I learned about my "little" boat.  I'm looking forward to getting to know my new boat.  I'm sure I'll have some posts with questions.  Many thanks to this forum and its members.

Very nice. I have good friends, dock neighbors, with a 2006 390 (black hull) with diesels.  Very nice boat.  Do you have the diesels?

Handy - Yes, the blue hull....  I've been looking for a 390/400 for a while and there are a lot of them with the blue hull - wasn't my first choice, believe me.

Dream_Inn - I have 496's with Bravo 3's.  I'm sure the diesels provide much more power.  My 340 has the 350's. I've been happy with their performance but that is a lot less boat to push.

RiverRat - Below are a few more pics.  I love the layout of the 390/400.  U-shape seating in the aft and plenty of seating up by the helm.

Looks nice, where do you boat? Looks like a nice lake

I bought the boat in Red Wing, Minnesota on the Mississippi.  It is in dry storage for the winter there.  I boat at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.  Here is the fun part....  I'm planning on driving it down the Mississippi in the spring to St Louis (where I live) and then having it transported to the lake.  Hoping the floods aren't too bad in the spring.

That will be an awesome drive!  My boat originally came from LOTO and was shipped to OH to be sold, which is where I bought it.  DTS?  the boat will do well with the 496 and B3s.

No DTS.  Would love to upgrade someday but I'm sure that is pretty pricey.  Do you have DTS?

Yes, I do have DTS.  Definitely a big improvement over the cable driven.  It also allowed me simpler connection to install vessel view.

You will be just fine with those big blocks, I'm not sold on the diesels, I am restoring mine for the Spring and am surprised at how hard it is to find parts and when I do the prices are crazy, my previous boat had Mercs and the parts were much easier to find. Those 496 's will move that boat well, congrats

@goalie59 - I agree.  I was not saying he should have diesels, just wondering if he did.  I have the identical boat (just a different platform and some slight changes in cabin, but same hull) with 496s and B2 drives.  She gets up and goes in a hurry!

I agree. Nothings sets you back in your seat like the thrust from a big block. Kind of wish my 410 had them.

You have to admit, it's a good-looking boat.  (And not just because mine looks like that!)

@rmrstlmo  I just checked out LOTO on Google maps. Wow, every foot of waterfront is occupied and everyone has some type of boathouse in the water. Not used to seeing that density where I live. Is that cottage country or suburban waterfront commuting to work to a major city? Beautiful area for sure.

LOTO is definitely unique.  Lots of waterfront bars and restaurants.  There are some more secluded spots including a state park that we're not far from.  We keep the boat in a marina and sleep on the boat - many nights on the hook.

Welcome to 390 and 400 level of boat.  Great looking boat.  I just upgraded from a 342 in August.  It's a great step up.  Bring the hull up will be hard the first time after that with the right compound and wax is easier every year as my 342 had the blue hull.  I have the black hull on the 400 same issues so now I start all over again.  I have 496's DTS with B3's great setup except both my transom plates need replacing had water leaking in. I had mine up to 37mph on cell phone GPS. Your trip in the spring sounds like a fun one.  Not sure how far it has to travel by truck to your lake but taking off the hardtop isn't too bad of a job.  Everything on my boat just unplugged and we set it down on the swim platform.  have pictures if you need them for reference.  I have a question for the group how rare are the 390's and 400's any idea on numbers built as they are hard to find especially in Canada

I don't think they are that rare, maybe just in your area.  I think we have 6 just in my marina.

They are pretty rare at LOTO.  I've only seen a couple at the lake in the past several years.  One of which was for sale.

SimcoeRinker342: The boat will be transported about 120 miles to the lake from St Louis.  I have a company lined up that says they can do it without removing the hardtop.  Just the radar dome will have to come off.

On my boat it was harder to remove the radar than it was to fold the arch! 🙄

YYZRC I am coming up to the bay this upcoming year for that beer  . Here in Ontario, I have only seen very few 390 and 400's forsale mostly out towards Quebec with crazy price tags and the rest in the good old USA!  I got mine at deal which now with the repairs brings me closer to the Quebec prices.  Dream_Inn I read through your stuff I think you have went through all this stuff already.  Anything else to look out for while I have everything apart.  The Big thing I get a week to recondition the engine bay with new bilge paint so everything will look factory new!   Also the hull is dry even with the transom plates leaking had my moisture tester and checked all over the hull.

Simcoe, just make sure extra sealant is gooped behind those transom plates.  I'm sure you're having most stuff replaced while they are in there, which is good because our boats are pretty heavy for those drives to push.  Not sure if you use you're raw water pump (hose under port seat), but one of the best things I did was just remove the input hose to the pump (from seacock) and run a hose with a npt on the end to the back of the bilge (next to drain plug).  It allows me to drain that annoying quart of water that sits in the bilge.  Add some pictures of the painting.  I'd really love to see it!

Another item you may want to look at is the connections at the back of the generator.  The main power in goes thru feed throughs that tend to corrode.  Very hard to get thru as you have to take the entire sound shield off.  It is on the little piece at the stern, on the bottom.  It is worth your time and effort to look at them now before it becomes a problem.  Would be much easier to replace with motors out of the way.  You would need these parts:

Amazon.com: 3/8" Red Remote Battery Terminal Feed Thru: Automotive

Amazon.com: Fastronix 3/8" Black Remote Battery Terminal Feed Thru: Automotive

Amazon.com: Fastronix 3/8" Stud Terminal Covers Red and Black: Automotive

My dear friend Al Wagoneer said that a 390/400/420 left the factory every 2 weeks for a lot of years. FYI
