2003 - 250 FV Merc 5.0 MPI not cranking

Hi Guys,
The MPI engine will not crank but can hear the solenoid operating, no matter whether its on battery 1 or 2, even on emergency start.

I have put the batteries on charge via Shore power for the night. Tomorrow I will clean the battery connections and check for power drop through to the starter via the solenoid.

Anyone know what tools I need to remove the starter unit from the engine and then strip it down, are there any special tools needed.

Is your kill switch on or off?
Is the transmission in neutral?

Yeah, both rechecked several times.
Been told there is a circuit breaker on the engine, so will check that tomorrow too.

Yes. There is more than one actually but the main 50 amp breaker should be checked.

The circuit breaker is on top of the engine, behind the throttle body. Big red button.

Isn't there also an in-line fuse that can "burn-out"?

OK thanks guys,
Checking the circuit on Sunday with a meter, found although the slave solenoid alongside the circuit breaker was clicking. It was not bridging, so I bridged it with a spanner and presto it started.
Getting an OEM item here in UK, but noticed it looks if the solenoid could be dismantled for repairs as a spare.

Am I right.

That solenoid is the same one on the drive trim pumps. $20 part.

@rinkerboy, glad to hear that you are going oem for your solenoid as oem marine is double insulated and grounded for non-spark ignition protection and as I'm sure you know - critical for a marine environment (law and insurance). If getting a solenoid re-built (probably more expensive than the oem part) make sure the shop knows it's for marine.

Fitted the new 'Quicksilver' solenoid and all good.
