@aero3113, the spin on one is probably a common type of water separating fuel filter that Mercruiser used back then.

Yes, it is. I'm just wondering if there is any other filters/screens I'm missing that should be cleaned or changed.

@aero3313, I'll look at my old service notes for my 350s from the 2000s. I don't remember having to take apart the fuel pump to service a filter like in the new cool fuel modules which have two filters in them. I have seen plenty of add on filters that were done by owners but not o.e.m.

Ok, thanks MT. (I dont see any add on's)

I was told that fuel water separator was not good for the engines that it restricted the fuel flow, Is that BS or Not I never looked more in to it.

Unless you let the FW separator get clogged it is, in my opinion, BS. I had them on several engines and they ran well and fast. Mind you I often heard from techs that you can "go a couple of years" without changing them, which, imo, is also BS. I changed mine FWS every year and looked at them from time to time to see if there was any junk in them - but I have never run that ethanol cr*p in my engines. Maybe the FW separators have fallen out of favor with the more recent wide use of ethanol?

We have no choice but to use ethanol here. I have never had a ethanol problem with my boat (knock on wood).....

Ok, boat is home so had a look to confirm what I already posted. My 05 does not have the newer cool fuel setup. I can feel a line go over to perhaps under the power steering pump and then to points unknown. Guess until I have to deal with it I won't dig further. I guess at this point I want to confirm if I can there are no fuel filters buried under there and it looks like the one in line filter is all I have to deal with. That filter so far looks like 60 bucks or so, it must be an HD filter and will replace it.

    Ras,

It looks and sounds like yours is like my 2004. Inline filter and the fuel/water separator filter is it.

    Al,

Which brand filter and number do you recommend that is 10 micron? I have tried to find the micron ratings on the various brands of inline filters, but have found it hard to find that info.

Ras from looking at the picture you posted earlier it looks like your in-line fuel filter has the 3/8" hoses and is attached to the top edge of a stringer?

If it were my boat I might consider adding a small bracket to the stringer and installing a spin-off fuel/water separator kit.

Sierra makes 10 micron fuel/water separator kits in aluminum and SS with both 1/4" and 3/8" hose fittings. For example the 3/8" SS kit is about $80 and includes both the bracket and fuel/water separator ( filter) pn 18-7945, (Mercury long style maxi-pleat). This might be worth investigating?

Sierra KIT SS  3/8"  pn 18-7985-1

Sierra KIT SS 1/4"  pn 18-7984-1

Sierra KIT ALU 3/8"  pn 18-7986-1

Sierra KIT ALU 1/4"  pn 18-187982-1

Of course, as Al said, Sierra makes a bunch of replacement cartridges and disposable in-line fuel filters. They have charts to match your specifics or any local marine shop should be able to tell you exactly what you need - if you need it before Al is done sledding - around May 2016?  LOL

Yep to Rob, and Michael, it is mounted to a stringer. I also have a spin on fuel water seperator nearer to the fuel pump. Thanks all, just have a different system than most I guess!

Well Ras if you have the fuel/water with the pleated filter that will get rid of a lot/most of unwanted water/debris in the fuel line. I guess that second filter is just extra insurance. I can't tell from the picture but it looks disposable as in disconnect, pitch and replace?. If so, Sierra does make replaceable in line filters of different micron ratings. I think we talked about this on the forum before and decided to be careful to not restrict the fuel flow for a whole bunch of reasons. 10 micron seems to be a common  size and that's what Al recommended! I know in my 8.2 mags there are two filters in the cool fuel module. A small circular pre-filter and a larger secondary pleated filter. I had 90 hours on the engines and about 12months of use. I was told no need to replace. I insisted and there sure was a need.....even though I only use 3 fuel suppliers, run 91 octane (non-ethanol) and don't fill-up after they have just received a gas shipment - my filters still definitely  needed replacement. Cheap insurance, IMO!

I agree- it and the fuel water separator will be replaced in short order!

Marine max had both filters so this is done on to the Genny.
