MarkB- all those cables have to go up behind the chartplotter. Two new cables(data and NMEA2000) will have to be ran to the VV4. Still not sure how I'm going to cover up the hole, but I'll think of something. It bothers me that owners/installers choose to bore holes through parts that are not easily replaced... Why didn't they drill that hole through the switch panel?!
Yea, if you look for it you can barely see where it was done. It took about 2 days to complete. I first dremeled out the holes and beveled the edges. I then filled them with an epoxy filler. After that I mixed the gel coat and filled the holes with it. They want you to put plastic over it and let it cure(I did have to fill a couple of air bubbles after it cured). Once it was cured I sanded with various stages of wet sand paper then a compound/polish and then wax.
I think my only problem will be sanding it... It's in a narrow awkward location. I'll take a better look at it this week(when it gets above 30 degrees!)
Diggin, that looks awesome, what cloth did you use? im planning a similar project to make a new top piece for my dash to mount chartplotter and flush mount the 2 way radio
I used speaker grill cloth to stretch over the wood... You can use just about anything that stretches to the shape you want. If I didn't have the grill cloth I would've used a t-shirt.
Got in the boat today and removed the switch panel. I bought a small Brother Labeler so I could label all the wires and switches(nice and neat to satisfy my OCD). The plan is to mess around with the layout and add 4 or 5 more contura switches and most importantly.... round that curve around the starboard cup holder(yeah... OCD!!!). The switch panel is getting brittle, cracking, fading and all the switch actuators need replacing as well. I am most likely ordering the actuators from Rockerswitchpros.com... A little expensive, but a real nice lazer engraved product. Here's some of the progress...
Got everything in, wired and functional... Fiberglass panels, VesselView 4 and new switch actuators... Still have a little fine tuning and sealant to do, but I'm getting excited!!!
Thanks guys... aero3113- I used spectrum color paste. It came out pretty good, you can still clearly see where the hole was(above the top left switch), but it's much better than what was there!!!
