The original one at Shippingport that @nhsd mentioned above also went online in 1957. It has been decommissioned and there is another plant at the same site. Where I live, north of Pittsburgh, I am due east of the cooling towers. In the winter, if the weather and wind is just right, we get snowfall from the plant. There have been times that we get 4-5 inches of snow and when you go 5 miles north or south, they don't have any snow at all.
My in-laws live close to Clinton Lake in Illinois. They boat there all the time because of the warm discharge water. They have a great extended boating season because of that plant.

Huh. Shippingport went online only six months after Belvoir. Must have been exciting times for the pioneers in that industry. I wonder if @frodo13056 is still around ...
speaking of restricted boating, we were up on Lake George on the St. Johns River and the east side is a training range for the Navy. We were OK in the water where we were at, but, 2 pilots who I guess were bored with dropping on targets thought they would take a run at us! There were a few boats on a trip north....anyway, they would come in low like you see in the movies on a strafing run, pull off and then come around again...did that about 3 times and then came in beside us, wagged their wings and flew off. They were close enough I could see them waive! It was awesome!
Ras, you may even have been a practice target. I'll say there have been many times where we (at work) have practiced on boats as targets of opportunities that are in the bay. & using one with AIS data, you have ground truth as well!
