Dinghy making it tough to plane

So I put my new 10 foot rib with 2 stroke 8hp motor on the platform with Nautly pull pull on davits.  Should be about 140 pounds.  Went out this morning and she just does not want to get on plane with the extra weight back there. Had the Mrs. go below and we got on plane.

So here's my thought. I can switch out my anchor rode for 200 feet of chain. Question is, how much chain can I fit in the locker?  And would an extra 140 pounds up front help?

I can't remember who it was but they hooked their dingy up to the platform so it would float/drag behind in the water. I would think that would help because most of the weight is on the water and not on the boat.

I’ve pondered more chain too to help get on plane. Or just lead weights too. I’m probably ~160# with my rib and 9.9. No problem getting up on plane even with my old 22P, the new 4x4 Hill Marine 20P even peppier!

Oh there goes those 24s and that fuel economy. I would change the gears before you add more weight. I put truck full stuff in the boat this morning. The boat stripe went down in inch.

I know the 4 blades would help. But chain is $400 versus the price of new props.

I have 120’ of chain up front and it definitely helps get on plane faster for me.  There’s plenty of room for another 80’.  Not saying it’s the best way to solve your problem, but it’s doable.

@diggin2day1 How does that work? I've got a 280 EC and I'm looking at options for the dinghy. For as infrequently as we'll take the dinghy with us vs running the dinghy by itself, I'd much prefer a small Boston Whaler, but that will certainly overload the swim platform without a solution like this. Other option I considered is making a rigid tow system out of carbon fiber or PVC that will keep the dinghy behind us, but I'd have to photograph our wake on plane and figure out the sweet spot.

I had 2 stainless davit loops made to fit in the swim platform cutouts. My dink has a high pressure floor with inflatable keel... I use two stainless carabiners to attach the dink loops to the davits... that’s all. I drag that dinghy for a 200 mile round trip to Block Island(crossing 16 miles of big water) every year. Only issue with this setup is stern-in docking(for obvious reasons!!)

@gack - Any idea how much 120’ of chain weighs? I’m interested in doing the same thing.

120’ weighs about 130 lbs.

The vendor I  checked had their 1/4 galvanized listed at .78 pounds per foot.  Another vendor (Amazon) had the shipping weight of 200 feet of chain at 140 pounds.  So it's been tough to find an accurate weight.

Figured out during the weekend that I may have a bad outdrive trim solenoid.  I had to baby it to get the starboard drive all the way down.  When I got home I raised the hatch and tried the switch.  It would click every time, but only move about half the time.

Still buying chain anchor rode.

I'm going to look at increasing my trim tab size over the winter.  But for this season I"m trying to find options that don't require the boat to come out of the water.

Lead weights

experiment starting!  Ordered 180# of lead bar. Will offset my dinghy wright w/motor by 20#. I’ll put the bars in the anchor rode area. Will advise.

180# of lead bars. Wrapped in flexseal tape just to cover any rough edges. 

Rough estimate: picked up the stern 2-3” for sure. Win. 

Got in a test run today. Boat definately sits more level. 1 adult, 2 teens. 1/2 fuel and water: even with no tabs got up on plane easy, faster with tabs but a noticable improvement.  Coming off plane: less swamping of the swim platform too.

Hard to get a great pic. Prior to adding the ballast, the water would sit just about at the bottom forward edge of the swim platform. I am 3-4” higher now.

Now you've got me thinking.  A little ballast might help my boat, and that seems to be the cheapest on the market.

My new anchor rode came with 50 feet of chain and on top of that I now always store my extra beer (of which there is lot's) and water and tools in the forward compartments under the v berth and I see a difference getting on plane. Go physics!

Looks like the bad drive trim down solenoid was the bulk of my problem.  I can get the drives all the way down now and this weekend didn't have any trouble getting on plane.  The new anchor chain arrives in a few days.  Can't hurt to have the added 140 lbs on the bow.
