My buddy Don loves his sailboat. In the 20 years I've known him, the boat has only left the slip ONCE -- and that was when Hurricane Isabelle left the boat temporarily sitting on top of the pier. But do you think he'll ever sell the boat? No way! He just loves owning a boat.
Hi my name is Chris I'm a boataholic. I spend at lesse 10 grand on boating a year. I still enjoy it enough to say it's well spent. I'm 52 now and can agree with Steve it asorbs a lot of time as does house, pool, cars, kids, grand kids, and the dog.(life) I could sell it and sit on my front lawn and yell at people going by??
well Im on a 9 mile lake so we don't take trips just putt around and find a spot to anchor drink ,eat and swim so far I think I spent 200 on fuel (had a full tank from last year )I have a barter deal with the marina for the summer slip and winter storage , I do most of my own maintenance,so I think my biggest expense is the beer and food .
What you spend or dont spend on your boat is relative to your income. I had no payment, no slip or storage fees. Just insurance, fuel and maintenance. Oh add in the upgrades which seem to be never ending. I may have a different feeling when I retire. We shall see.
My name is Dan and I'm a freakin boataholic!!!! I'll be 59 in a couple of months and I've been boating for 25+ years, had a cruiser for the last 13. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I do most of the work that's needed myself. That helps with the affordability part of it but as Handy stated, it takes a lot of my time especially in the fall and spring.
The reason I stay in it is that there's just something about pulling into the marina on Friday and spending the weekend on the boat. I just LOVE sleeping on our boat....the rocking/water lapping on the hull is just a very soothing motion/noise to me.
Going into boating I knew it was going to be expensive......anyone that thinks its not is delusional. For me, the relaxation it provides is well worth it.
No longer a boat owner.....previous boat - 2005 Rinker Fiesta Vee 342
Maybe that was how my problem started! I had a waterbed (full motion) from a young age growing up until, I don't know, 10 years or so ago. (now I have the sleep number, which is great!)
Handy's 1st camping trip there will be a redneck dude missing teeth overalls and playing a banjo. Nothing like quiet time on the water. Just saying.
Remindes me of when my wife and I went camping with her brother and his wife up in Vermont. Late one night, our site neighbor was screaming at his camp fire and throwing beer at it. When he was done he dragged his giant cooler into his tent. LoL!!
When I'm living part of my hear in a more tropical/warmer destination ... a center console, maybe 26 to 28' is what I'll get. The fishing will be great!
I wonder if the guys who go to the casino and blow $10,000 every weekend think it's a good investment? Boating, if you have money and time to blow ... could be fun. LOL.
A guy I work with has boats (26' bowrider, 44' bridge style boat, jet ski), horses, and an airplane. Oh, and another house somewhere on the water in the Carolinas (may not be there now though). Way too many toys to have while you are still working a full time job. He also likes to maintain things as much as possible himself.
Just spend $1800 today on new custom cover for pontoon, I do BBQ competition we spend $1000 every event we compete at. Have a $3000 smoker, $2000 trailer, thousands in other equipment. Every hobby is expensive. Camping: lets see $50K in a truck, $50k in camper and equipment, ya got to pay to park in camp site, it is kinda hard to have a campfire on a boat. Any hobby is better than sitting on the couch.

Unless your hobby makes you money, none can be ‘justified’ outside of your personal enjoyment.

You know, they can take the boy out of the Rinker, but they can't take the Rinker out of the boy.
