Drive Cylinder braided Lines

I just purchased new exterior braided lines for my drive trim cylinders. Any tips for install? Should I use sealant on the threads? Any specific torque for the fittings?

No sealant needed but you may want to spray some penetration oil a day before

No bleeding required when I did mine last year the new ones were black(something). All the threads came out nicely. There is a left and right one.

Glad to see mine aren't the only ones that look like that. Although not as bad. I'm shooting for one more season out of them.  Too many other things on my list and I hope to be floating by the kids April break...

Is that bottom paint touching the drives??? No good

@Handymans342 , it's been like that since I purchased the boat. Never been an issue, I've read that that theory is not 100% proven.

Does your bottom paint have copper in it? if no then you are probably fine. Many of the newer coatings do not contain copper

Yes, it has copper in it.

All set to install the lines. I removed the drive and loosened all the fittings to see if there will be any stubborn ones. Seems like all is good and will be pretty straight forward. Just need for them to arrive, hopefully tomorrow.

I was going to add shop the parts on Ebay.....I had to replace one of mine as well as moth lines from the manifold to the trim pump and found VERY reasonable prices...not always but sure did on these parts.

The lines arrived today. Will hopefully be installing them tomorrow afternoon if the rain stops by then.

I was able to install the lines this morning. No issues going on, will have to leak check once I get the batteries back in the boat.

I have to do this also I guess you just remove and replace looks like there is nothing to bleed after the install just run them up and down ?

Yes...that's what I did to mine just run them.

Yes, just run them up and down. One thing I did learn was make sure the lines are in a good position at the full up and down position. I didn’t check that and one line came slightly loose and started to leak a little while after it was in the water. Luckily my cousin had a trailer for his 24 SR. We pulled my 242 out and at the up position you can see there was tension that caused it to loosen up. Once I tightened it in the correct position, no more leak.

Okay, as a trailer/lake boater who doesn’t have to do bottom paint, what is the issue with the paint touching the drives?

Older bottom paint for salt water had a lot of copper in it and would cause corrosion. I think the newer paints have a different formula and isn’t as much of a concern. I never had any issues with my 242 and now my 330 is painted the same with no corrosion.

Your outdrive is the gound to the boat hence all the little wires connecting steering linkage trim cylinders and so on. If the copper paint hits the drive the hole boat is a gound and the drive will be the weak  point and corroded 1st. The mercathoid puts out 3 volts + under the drive to help with this.

My 242 didn’t have a Mercathode system, my 330 does.

This could be a separate thread and I think either I or someone else posted this a long time ago, but here it is again. A good explanation of the Mercathode system but there is a whole book worth of info here on how to diagnose gimbal bearing trouble, transom leaks, how to change bellows etc.
