Screw Cover Vinyl

Just like everyone else with an older boat, my screw cover vinyl has shrank over the years. I called Taylor Made last week inquiring about a new vinyl and they told me that I needed a part number for the windshield. They told me it was under the vinyl, if not, call Rinker and try and get the part number from them via the HIN and build sheet. While at the boat this past weekend, I pealed the vinyl back and about 18" in, there was the part number. I called Taylor Made back this morning and they still had the build sheet for the windshield on file and I was able to order the correct vinyl in a length that is more than what I need so I can cut it long. They are going to ship it out sometime this week. They had really good customer service. For my boat the part number is 41100024.

I just got my screw cover vinyl today. TaylorMade has great customer service. They called me when the part shipped and gave me the tracking number. When I measured the cover for my boat, I came up with 22'. According to their specs, I needed 23' and that is what I purchased. I figured that too much is better than too little. Not to get it installed... I am going to remove each screw and rebed it with 3M4000.

Yes, they told me 23'. I had some extra which was good. I cut the cover long and tucked it under the ends. Like I stated above, I rebeded each screw with a squirt of 3M4000UV.

I guess I forgot how far back on the side the window goes. How much of the 23' did you use?

I used at least 22 feet. I unrolled it, cut it into 2 pieces to make it easier to work with. I did it while I was in my slip.

@Cableguy Greg was it hard to get to the seals and screws port and starboard while in the water? How many screws fell in the water?

None fell into the water. I had a 24' finger, so I was able to get the port side while standing on the dock. The starboard side I did half while on the bow, then reached over and did the other half. I would remove 3 screws at a time, fill then replace. That was the windshield would not move.

I guess we'll see what I get from GLS. It is that same part number as Taylor Made but it says it's only 8' and specifically for the Rinker 280, maybe it's only enough for one side. It's only my captain side that is short a few inches so it will work.

@Cableguy Greg , where on the windshield is that data tag located? Near the walk through?

Mine was on starboard side, aft, near the arch, but TaylorMade said there should be one on on both sides. Should look like this...

Once I get the shrink wrap off I’ll look for it.

I did get mine in from GLS and it was 8' as advertised, still haven't put it on but after looking at the boat it's definitely the right length. This seems like it would have been something readily available and common but apparently not.

I think there's something like 13 different cover profiles just from TaylorMade. When I called them to order they really wanted the info from the label even though I was pretty sure I had the right one looking at their website.

Believe the number also gives them the length as well as the profile. They said I needed 22 feet and with overlap, they were right on.

@Cableguy Greg - I know you're going to rebed the screws with 4000, but I have a tube of 4200 available -- do you think that's overkill or OK to use? It's covered by the vinyl strip so no sun directly on it and it would save me a trip to West Marine.

4200 would be fine since it’s under the cover.

I sealed up my windshield screws today. It seemed like all of the front starboard screws were loose. I had to replace one screw with a larger size because it wouldn’t tighten.

The cover I got from GLS that they said was specifically for my boat is about 10" short. I need to measure it and see if it's the 8' as advertised. I'll probably just use it to splice into my old one to make up the shrinkage on the old one.

I did find that my port windscreen screw center most one was stripped like @aero3113. Are the screws basically a wood screw pointed style? I didn't bother pulling the old one out yet.

Yes, pointed wood screws. Taylor Made got back to me and said I will need 25’ for my windshield. They didn’t tell me how to order, which I did ask in the email. I wrote back, hopefully will hear back from them tomorrow.

I ended up calling TaylorMade. They took my cc info over the phone. The order shipped in a few days.

I emailed a payment sheet in on the 10th I think, it arrived today! I really pushed it in tight all around and under the frame. Even if it shrinks there will be plenty to make up for the difference.

Good thing yours fit. I still haven't bothered calling GLS I also needed to measure what they sent and see if it's even the length they advertised.

@aero3113 - Plan on doing mine Sunday. Did you start aft and work your way forward or visa-versa? Did you allow any play lengthwise? I've heard it might buckle from heat expansion if you don't leave it a little short when installing. Wondering how much play there is.
  • aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 10,007 ✭✭✭✭✭
I didn’t leave any play, I figured the old one shrunk, so will this one. Will see what happens. Port side I started aft starboard side I started from the front only because the ladder was there and I hopped up. Wouldn’t make a difference either way. The front ends with a straight cut, the aft you have to cut on an angle to match the frame. Very easy install.
