Cool Fuel Filters

I replaced my cool fuel filters in June of last year, after I burned off all of the two year old gas. I figured the filters would be good for two seasons.

I pulled them to inspect and this is what I found. This is about 30 hours of use, mostly at planing speeds.

The cylinder filters were not great either. I replaced them all.

@YYZRC the fuel additive you put in may have contributed to to the quickness.

@aero3113 yes it’s totally possible that either the STP injector cleaner or the Quicksilver Quickleen is responsible. I recommend you check yours since you used the Quicksilver stuff.

You’re a braver soul than me futzing with fuel filters while anchored out. Even with a ding I’d rather be at the dock doing that stuff!

@YYZRC , did you have to fill the bowls with fuel? Last time I replaced them I had an issue starting. Once I filled the bowls I was good to go.

No I didn’t @aero3113 - I just left the keys in “on” for 15 seconds to let the pumps prime the system.

Now that I have the $10 Amazon filters, I will change them 2x per season.

I'll still stick with one time per season. I get real nervous being in a confined space with flammable liquids around me with no quick way out.

Not a good time/place for a stogie, that's for sure. I love the smell of gas tho...

How are the Amazon filters working out for you? I want to order a few but the one review where the guy states he had issues from the secondary filter has me concerned. Any issues on yours? How long have you been running them?

@earl1z19 I still have the OEM filters installed from last August. Will put the Amazon filters in soon.

I've been using the Amazon version for last two seasons. Haven't noticed any difference from OEM. Here's what I used: https://www.amazon.com/Filtering-35-8M0093688-8M0093688-35-892665-Mercruiser/dp/B08C55CQ25 (Changed 1X/year at end of season.)

Same for me, have used the Amazon ones with no issues for the last 3 seasons. I have a few extra that I carry in the engine room as well.

Little trick I noticed: Amazon .ca and .com share the exact same URL's and product numbers except for the domain. So just change .com to .ca or visa-versa and you should wind up with the same product, but in your own territory. It's worked every time I've every tried.

Here are the OEM filters after approx 30 hours/3 months of run time. Fuel is always ValvTect Marine fuel (for whatever that is worth).

Starboard cup is much dirtier, no idea why.

That seems like a LOT of dirt/debris for that amount of time.

How many gallons of fuel would that have filtered. Probably more meaningful than hours run.
