342 Shower sump replacement

McGarnicleMcGarnicle Member Posts: 246 ✭✭✭
Hi all - started up the water system on my 04 342 for the first time in a few years and the shower sump needs to be replaced.

Has anyone found a replacement that fits? Went and grabbed a rule from west marine and unfortunately was too wide.

Is it the pump? I found mine was an issue and it was the solid state float, not the pump.

If the original sump box is still useable, just replace the pump in it.

I've read a few guys on hull Truth replacing the sump box with a whale gulper. Theoretically it won't get clogged by hair/soap.  Just turn the switch on while showering.  I just replace my overboard macerator with a whale gulper this week.  I pump out at the launch ramp RV campground.    This is my next upgrade.  I'm tired of cleaning soap scum from the shower box and hair out of the inline screen filter.  I want less maintenance from my boat.

I plan on keeping the shower box but only for the AC conversation and bleed lines.

I have the whale gulper as my shower sump and it’s awesome. Only drawback is that it’s a bit noisy.

I use a monthly hot water rinse to liquify whatever grease/soap might be in there, so it gets pumped out.  Haven't had a problem since I started doing that.  And that's a single sump tank for 2 showers/sinks, washer/dryer, dishwasher and galley sink.

I fill a pan with water and warm it up on the cooktop.  Turn on the galley sink and run hot tap water down the drain for a few minutes.  Then dump the pan of hot water down the sink.

I use white vinegar and let it sit. Works great

@YYZRC can you give me more information on the whale gulper please. What model? Did you install...was it a simple install?

I am actually having an issue with my sump pump. The pump itself comes on, sometimes it pumped water out, sometimes it would come on and not pump water out. The float seems to be working fine, so I replaced the pump with the same Rhule model, figuring that would solve the issue. Nope, does the same thing. The pump always comes on when the float comes up…but sometimes it pumps out water and sometimes it doesn’t. Nothing seems to be blocking the water drain because when it pumps out, it takes the water out immediately. If I keep hitting the float up and down, it will finally start to pump. I'm stumped. Maybe the gulper is for me.

I had that issue with the Rule - I removed the backflow valve and then it worked fine. Remove the fittings on the sump box and check if yours has the valve installed.

The install was just remove sump box replace with Gulper. I added a switch in the head (proper Vimar brand switch to fill the blank).

The Gulper would be one of my first mods if I get a different boat. Highly recommend.

A question about why you ran power from the vacuflush…couldn’t you just tie in the power that was there from the sump pump already without having to run a different power source? There is a breaker for the sump pump.
