I'm looking at my raymond James statements and it shows as an available cash of 16 grand- is that interest etc not applied?
  • WillhoundWillhound Member Posts: 4,220 ✭✭✭✭✭
Cash is cash. It will include any interest accrued up until the statement date. Usually "cash" is held in an interest bearing account or a cash equivalent like a money market account that is easily convertible to cash. Most brokers will always keep some cash aside in case a buying opportunity comes up, or as a readily available source of extra cash if you need it, or as a cushion in case of market declines. Sometimes they will sell investments that have gained and keep that in cash, it preserves the gain.

Thanks for that explanation @Willhound. I assumed as much- that same amount has been on my statement for several months. Perhaps they will take advantages of some of these deals on the dip but over my knowledge to play with.

If the amount hasn't changed, then it is indeed cash. If it was in some kind of interest bearing account or money market you'd see a bit of growth. If your broker thinks there are opportunities in the market it would have to be with your knowledge and consent and even if you don't understand it all they should be explaining what the investment is, the pros and cons and how it works before investing your cash.

I'll bring the thread back up for you @rasbury .  Market has definitely been climbing. I just need it to continue to get my early retirement!
I still have a ton of shares in NIO, which I sure hope continues to climb.  I've bought and sold some here and there, but still have a bunch that I'm keeping long term.

If you were to invest right now what three stocks would you recommend buying today?

We're talking about weekend beer money amounts.  Something fun to play with.  Going to buy my kid 100 bucks in some stocks to play with.  Nothing long term but something he can sell and maybe make a few dollars off of and if he loses it oh well.

Rick, one of those three would be KO (coke).  It is not an exciting one though, but if you left it in at least long enough to also learn about dividends, it is a good one ( V - Visa is kind of the same).   My second choice, the riskiest, would be NIO.  It has high volatility, watch it for a bit and buy at a lower than average price (earnings report and monthly sales should be coming, could lower it more or raise it - buy half before and half after?).  The third should be something your kid gets into.  For example, if he got into computers, believe it or not, IBM has gotten pretty hot.  But, I guess that may be too old tech.  I'm sure some would say Gold or Crypto?

Every one of my coke experiences were always exciting. You're dealing with the wrong broker. Mine have been doing OK and recently started drawing my ss.  The money I had invested was to obviously help fund a retirement- which now basically I'm hoping to grow for my disabled kid. Hopefully I can squeeze a little income out it while keeping it growing also.  At 66 the plan was the 270 on the intracoastal- current plan is now raising two great grandchildren,  my disabled one and her mother (still raising her apprently). You make plans and God laughs. As long as the stock market does not puke I should make it to the finish line...

I currently have NIO and all it's done is tank ever since.  I think today is at the lowest it's been since I bought in but I suppose buying now could be a good idea if it's kept a modest amount.

I'll check out the rest, thank you for the insight.  I hope he enjoys it and can track it better and then I can.  The idea is getting him to invest time and effort into something small for now.

For his graduation I figured I'd give him a few hundred in crypto and a few hundred in Tesla,  maybe if left alone, in 20 years it would be worth a fortune.  If only my dad had some that for me with Tesla, Bitcoin, Apple or Amazon.

I'll also be accepting recommendations for long term investments for him if Tesla and or Bitcoin isn't how you'd go.

Had a pretty crazy week last week... it'sbeen a little rough since T got into office and kept talking about T'S... finally got some fun times in starting last Tuesday. I can say that while this isnt the most responsible picture. I felt like captain of the Enterprise, doing 80mph watching Kohl's run more than 100% (I was in at the blue line) on I75 West on the way to vacation, pushing "sell" over and over while the car was handling the driving (Full self driving in a tesla is out of this world).

Need to take vacation more often.. Was a great week for multiple reasons!!

Don't worry, long term stuff did great too.

    CONY, TSLY, NVDY...

I sold XRP last week for a bit.. at this point in my journey - I'm looking more at dividends and it doesnt get any better than Yieldmax. Buy as much as you can for him and just let the div's accumulate.. seriously.

Dividends are great if they are in a tax sheltered account (ie, retirement account such as 401k).  Otherwise the taxes on them really ruin it (if you are working).  Rick, I hear you on NIO.  Only reason I offered it up is that it is down right now and has a lot going for it the next 6 months.  But, it is a high risk too.  AMAT, HD, & WMT are all good long term ones.

Ras, I didn't mean Coke wasn't doing well, it is doing great.  But for some, they may call it boring cause it is like the tortoise, slow and steady  .  I've got mixed feelings about Tesla stock.  I guess if you're gonna buy, let it go down some more first.  To me, it is just way over valued.

    @J3ff great music! :smile:

NIO has fallen about 3% since Monday....how low will she go????

The only tax shelter I have is tax evasion...it's a lifetime commitment.
