Removed my Starboard pump today and will be sending it to Hardin to be rebuilt. It had a steady drip when running.

I also replaced the impeller on my port pump. The inner and outer plates were scored pretty good but the impeller was still in good shape. This was with three seasons of use.

I normally put them back together using Permitex Aviation Gasket sealer. It always made a mess and was a pain when I had to remove the gasket. This time I used DC-111 (Silicone Grease). Should make it much easier to take apart next time.

@aero3113 - Curious: Three season equates to how many engine hours?
  • aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
@TonyG13 , I never really kept track of hours per season. Maybe 120 hrs for the three.

I sent my leaking starboard pump into Hardin for a rebuild. They said it’s $35/hr. Plus parts. I figured to have them do it, this way it will be covered under warranty if it leaks early.

Will have my pump back on Wednesday, $154.35 for the rebuild. This includes a new impeller/parts and shipping as well.

Dang, I should have charged that much for all those rebuilds I did back in the day!   :D

    LoL, @LaRea !
Its actually not a bad deal if you think about how much the rebuild and impeller kits cost.

UPS charges are outrageous as well. We get all kinds of complaints at work of people claiming we are ripping them off. All they get charged is what we get charged - no mark up.

Agree @captkevin they changed $24.36 for UPS shipping. I shipped it to them via USPS and it was $24.55.

The hard part is removing the pump why are you paying somebody to rebuild it?
  • aero3113aero3113 Member Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
@rasbury it wasn’t just replacing the impeller.
I don’t have a press to remove and install the bearings. This pump was leaking.

With UPS you get tracking. With USPS you get the chance for them to lose it.

LoL, you do get tracking with USPS but I feel most of the time the tracking number doesn’t work!’

My son said today that he was looking forward to using Lareas press that we bought from him.  I’m looking forward to it too!😀

I bought this on a whim, but I can't tell you how many times it's been used and borrowed. For sure, there is better quality but for the price it's hard to beat. I added some polyurethane wheels to easily move it around and it's quite a popular tool to lend out.

I also highly recommend this to complement it:

That's similar to the press I had.  I agree -- once you have it, you'll find plenty of jobs that need it.

I'm about ready to break out the press.  I still need to order the kit to repair it.  Do you happen to remember the part number of the kit from Hardin?

@Dream_Inn not sure if these numbers help, they are for the Gen 7 plus.

Apart from impellers I had the first OEM rebuild last year on port engine due to leaking shaft. Mine is a 2003 model…

Is the “prettiness” worth the cost?

When I bought my 330 both of the OEM pumps were leaking. I went with the Hardin pumps because of the removable wear plates. I’m happy with them, this was the 5th season using this pump before it started leaking. I’m not regretting them but yes, they should last longer before the seals wear.

Seems like the Hardin solved a problem that very few people had (wear on the inside end of the pump) but created a bigger problem in that the seals and/or bearings fail much sooner than the OEM pump seals/bearings.

But yes, to your point @Ian , they sure are pretty!

I’m hoping that they’re replacing the seals with better quality now. My port pump has been leak free since it was rebuilt a few years ago.
