Depth finder

My circa 2007ish Faria depth finder is dying a slow and painful death. Recently it has worked, then not worked. If it is shot, what should I replace it with? The sounder is drilled through the hull, so if I replace with the same style, I need one that is the same size hole, or bigger. I could go with the one that is mounted to the transom as an alternative. Has anyone replaced theirs and what did you replace it with?

I am in the exact same spot and very interested in hearing the answers.  Mine only works when I am going very slow.  As soon as I pick up speed its stops.

I don't rely on the dash dept...I have a garmin echoMap 74v with transom mount ducer....although my dash guage and the plotter have very close readings....Garmin is better while underway.

After pulling the dash panel out, I found the negative wire pulled out of the molex connector behind the depth finder. I rigged it back together and it is working again. Saved myself $60. I just wish I knew where to get the molex connectors and tool.

I replaced all my gauges recently, but depth finder just reads 0.0, so I guess I have a problem with the transducer.  Also have a garmin echoMap that is busted or not getting power.  Haven't got around to diagnosing it yet.  Is it ossible to check the ducer without pulling boat out?

    @Cableguy Greg cant beat that!

@zaverin1 yes I get the --.  So I just need to replace the transducer?  Guessing that needs to be done out of the water?

@gack what did you figure out?

I am back on my depth finder giving me a -- while underway but works while I am moving slowly or not at all.  Do you think the transducer just needs to be replaced or the whole system?  If its just the transducer anyone know where I can find it?

    MUCH appreciated.

Correct thru hull ducers need boat out of water
my ducer will flake out when in chop
next fall when on blocks clean it with denatured alcohol
    water side of the ducer
you get junk and sometimes biotin paint on them causing them flame out

    Thank you very much @zaverin1.

This is the transducer correct?  At least a transom mounted one.   I believe I have this on the back of my boat.  It seems everything was mounted on back.

@06Rinker270 I haven't gotten to mine yet.  I'm thinking my ducer may be connected to the echoMap instead of the gauge.  Need to check wiring this weekend. Hopfully I don't have to pull the boat out to replace the ducer.

I may just need to get a new GPS and tie it in with a new depth finder.

I need to do my drive trim gauge next.  I am not sure where that issue lies either.

As I suspected, ducer was connected to the Garmin instead of the depth gauge.   I fixed power problem to the Garmin and problem solved.
