TV/Cable Aboard

We have marina wifi, its not awesome but we can stream netflix and hulu basic as long as our timing doesn't coincide with with other boat's kids movie time. Anyway looking to cut cable at home and go with Hulu Live for home cable and for use at the boat and looking for your ideas to mirror. For those that dont know Hulu Live is like cable. You can watch all of your channels, including local, on Hulu live and you get 40+ hrs of DVR and of course Hulu. $45/mo. The biggest drawback of Hulu Live is that you must pick your "home" IP address for smart TV's and Roku/Fire stick so for the boat TV we cant use the sticks or smart TV. But, you can watch Hulu Live on your ipad/iphone anywhere so we must mirror on the boat. Airplay wont work because its public Wifi. After some online research it looks like the only way to mirror my ipad to the TV without using airplay/wifi is going to be a hard cable. Looking for any other ideas from those that like to have dockside cable? Thanks

I looked into this last year for a little bit and then decided I didn't need it (I just use my Roku with connectivity to the marina wifi - yes, I pay for cable at home).  Anyway, here is one of the things I had looked into that does not need wifi support:

Thanks @Dream_Inn. Man I was so excited reading through that amazon product until I got to "not compatable with apple devices" We are all apple due to our company's issuing us apple. Honestly though this has me considering just buying a cheap droid tablet to do what I want to do wireless.....

It looks like you can mirror your device without having to use WiFi. So if you have a movie downloaded from Netflix, you can play to the chromecast without WiFi simply by mirroring it. At least that’s what I’m reading.

Yes, direct from ipad to TV - but that does need to have it on your iPad. Yes, I did a lot of reading on the chromecast one and just wasn't sure if it could really do what was needed.  Liberty, I had the option of Apple or Droid from my company, and went with droid since that is what I'm used to.  A cheap droid tablet may work.

I have a DISH tailgater. $5/ month if you have DISH tv at home.

Not true - Google sells a wired-ethernet adapter for $10.

I have the lightning to HDMI dongle to play my iPad on my TV in the boat. It works great.

Can you post a link to the adaptor? Will it work with Apple? I spent a lot of time looking in to google options and this never came up.

Good to hear, leaning this way. Reviews are bad but I’d just buy it direct from Apple for $10 more than amazon and if there is a problem I can always take it back to the Apple store. $50

I feel very low tech.  I have a regular TV antenna going to my 12v TV, and a 12v BluRay player that has USB and SD inputs.  So I can play media on thumb drive, disk, or memory cards from cameras.  Except the GoPro, which uses an MP4 format that is not vanilla.  

More often than not I watch regular over the air TV.

I do have a DVD movie collection on board which includes (IMO) a required copy of Jaws.

Sure? I have no issues playing GoPro video on both Windows and Apple devices natively outside their app and shared from a dropbox location to others.

Some devices like them.  My BluRay player in the boat does not. 

Need to see if it likes the video my Spark shoots.

Preload on your device at home, and then get an APPLE TV, hook it up to one of the HDMI ports and then cast from device to the APPLE TV unit.

Tried this: You need WiFi to cast from iPhone/pad to Apple TV. There is a way to do it on Bluetooth but it’s very clunky and doesn’t work. And airplay doesn’t work on public WiFi

Checkout YoutubeTv, I think there's a free trial, it's tech is best and it has local channels,DVR, etc. I pay $35 a month and cut the cord at home, it's easy and works well w Chromecast.

I considered UTube but according to the site their TV service with all the local and DVR is $50 per month and goes up from there. I went Hulu Live because you get all that, plus Hulu itself, for $45. Ended up buying the Apple Lightning/HDMI connector to hard wire my iPad to the boat TV to get everything. Will report back next week on how things went over the holiday. Bought connector directly from Apple so that it has a 1 year warranty and is easily returnable if it doesnt work.

Are you just going to play downloaded content, or try to use the public WiFi to stream, or use data plan to stream?

Both pre downloaded and public marina WiFi to stream, but airplay won’t work on public WiFi

Set up a VPN and log into your house thru that. You can spoof the airplay into working that way.

Just create a VPN on your phone, use that as the local wifi. It won't use any air time, as it is all local.

Hey sorry for the delay. It’s been working great with the Apple lightning hdmi connector. Hulu live and Netflix show up on the screen perfectly. We watched a movie during the rain this morning. Hard wire is the only draw back, but it works so we are happy. Admiral is super happy to have her dvr onboard
