IMO that's a huge improvement and will really protect your drive. I have helped friends with drives in that condition and we have used electric sanders to do the initial work including some of the very tiny carpentry sanders used for detailing. Nice work!
Thank you guys. When I sanded down the bad paint job the zinc chromate shows up. I have seen a few people say they use this for primer. What is it for?

@Michael T honesty to get all of it off I would need electric sander. So I am knocking down as much of it as I can with 80 grit without going too far.
@ alswagg Exactly why I just put a ton of work into getting all that paint off, well for the most part. He used Trilux brush on paint and just threw it on there with no sense of caring for the drive and where the paint went and how thick it was applied. He painted over the mercathode. Should this be replaced?
When I bought my boat last year the antifouling paint was right up to the drives how can I remove this paint around my Out drive? This has been bothering me when I pulled the boat out there was a lot of new corrosion !
You need to get the paint off those anodes. Metal needs to be in direct contact with the water and the drive otherwise it can't protect against galvanic corrosion.
@bella-vita - pay special attention to the corrosion around the hub (at the forward edge of the forward propeller). Too much corrosion there can cause the seal to fail, which means goodbye lower unit.
Going off on a tangent............. They can put someone on the freaking moon but nobody can make a drive that wont corrode... Really WTF?????????????? OK I am done...

Great link thanks John, sent them an email to just by the part under the drive if possible. Hopefully it wont be to involved to replace my self...although the painter should pay for it. Also going to do a test as well.
Yeah, that mercstuff link has a lot of really good info for drives. I seem to go back to it often. You probably saw, but it tells you how to test the mercathode.

Thank you everyone for your input and help. I love this forum and wish I could buy you all a drink. LaRea & Dream, soon I will buy you one!
Anyone know if the electrode part of the mercathode can be replaced easily? I dont think getting the paint off is an option.
