So how did you have such good fuel pressure with no fuel? I don't have cool fuel on my 05 mpi 350...i do have a silver cylinder which I assume is the fuel pump...have not had problems there...yet..
Look underneath your motor on the port side. I bet you do have the cool fuel system. The big silver unit next to the water fuel seperator is just a boost pump. My main fuel pump is underneath the motor in a black box.
Will you run at idle for say 20 seconds, then 25% throttle, 50%, throttle, 75% then 100% each for a 20 second run. This will provide baseline info to share with all members!! I still look to do more comparisons on mine!
Ps- glad and hope you found the problem..is their an easier sequence of checking to get where you got?
SUPER EASY>>>>>
We all know how to check fuel pump pressure on the rail via the schrader valve. If you disconnect power to the main pump ( cool fuel pump) and only leave the boost pump running you should see 8 psi of fuel pressure (rated output) when keying on the ignition. Mine shows 0. Also, if you have a pressure release valve on your gauge with a hose you can hold that valve down and see the fuel flowing into a container to visually verify the operation in addition to the pump pressure.
Another big win was the graduated cylinder test. I have something going on with the port motor side, this will be next to diagnose. I am flowing 25GPH less fuel on that side then my Starboard side. Im guessing i have a cool fuel pump that is failing over there since it is what does the majority of the pumping. Im told the boost pump is a piston style pump that has the abilty to draw fuel from the fuel tank. The main fuel pump is a vein style and does not have the abilty to "suck" fuel like the piston style does. This is the reason for the 2 pumps in series together.
I am running 22p props and I hit 40-41 mph at right around 5000 rpm (could be a little less rpm and could be a little more on these farias but it's wot).
Really pleased for you @Wildboating, its like torture when you can't get to the bottom of a long standing issue. Sounds like your new mechanic really helped and demonstrates that we always need to get the right guy looking at any issue.

Well, we ordered one yesterday for Friday delivery.
Unfortunately my wife's grandfather whom we cared for passed last night. Thankfully he passed peacefully and after a full life. So we need to transport him back to New Orleans for services.
It appears testing won't be until late next week at this point. However, I do need a gimbal bearing replaced and a drive seal done to be "all good" with the boat. I'm going to see if I can get both drives fully serviced twhile we are traveling. I had been trying to postpone this as to not loose any boating season. I have a seasonal tailgate business called Great Lakes Tailgate that consumes my weekends starting at the beginning of September. My boating clock is quickly running out of time.
Thanks Guys! We will all be so fortunate to live into our 90's.
Just found out we will not be departing now until Monday. So testing is ON!!!! I am excited to see what happens. Looks like i may have drive service lined up for next week as well. So by the next few weeks I may get to squeeze 1 or 2 weekends out after 3 years of trying before she gets put away.

His boost pump was working, it supplies the pressure, the non-working pump is used to pull from the tank and supply the boost pump.

i have heard it called the boost pump or lift pump, but like Black_Diamond said it is next to the fuel water separator.
